大学英语听力测试中，数字问题历来是必考项目。而一提到数字，就不可避免地涉及到计量(measurement)问题。所以，要攻克数字难关，除了要抓住数字本身的规律外，还应熟练掌握计量方面的相关知识。

　　计量就是测定物体的尺寸(如长度、宽度、高度)、面积、容量、数量、速度及温度等。关于计量问题，应从两个方面着手：

　　一、明确如何描述物体的尺寸、面积、容量、数量、速度、温度等。

　　1.利用计量单位来表达。请看下面几个例子：

　　He's about 6 feet 2 inches tall.他身高6英尺2英寸。

　　The box is 30 inches long, 15 inches wide and 8 inches deep.这个箱子长30英寸、宽15英寸、高8英寸。

　　The room is 25 square meters in area.这个房间的面积是25平方米。

　　The two villages are five miles apart.两个村子相隔5英里远。

　　The airplane travels at 500 miles per hour.飞机的飞行速度是每小时500英里。

　　His weight has increased to 180 pounds.他的体重已经增加到了180磅。

　　如以上各例所示，在表达长(length)、宽(width)、高(height)、距离(distance)等时，常要用到inch(英寸)，foot(英尺)，mile(英里)，meter(米)，kilometer(公里)这样的长度单位，其缩写形式分别为in (inch)，ft (foot)，ml (mile)，m(meter)，km (kilometer)。表达面积(area)时，各长度单位使用复数形式，并在其前加上square即可，如square meters(平方米)，acre(英亩)一词也可用来表示面积。表达重量(weight)时，一般会使用kilo(公斤)，pound(磅)，ounce(盎司)等计量单位。说到速度(speed)，常要涉及到second(秒)，minute(分钟)，hour(小时)这样的时间词和表示长度的计量单位，如meter，mile等。

　　此外，还要注意温度的表达法及读法。英语里，习惯用华氏温标表示温度。如The temperature is 89?埘. (The temperature is eighty-nine degrees Fahrenheit.)在较为正式的文体中，也经常使用摄氏温标。如The normal temperature of the human body is 37℃.

　　2.通过其他方式来计量。请看对话：

　　M：Excuse me, Madam. I'm a stranger here. Can you tell me the way to the Grand Theatre?

　　W：Go along this street for about ten minutes, and then you will see it. It's a stone's throw away from here.

　　Q：What is learned from this conversation?

　　A) The theatre is popular.

　　B) The theatre is very near.

　　C) The theatre is made of stone.

　　D) The theatre is large.

　　对话中，回答者虽未直接使用具体数字和表示距离的计量单位，但通过短语a stone's throw，她的意思已经表达得很清楚了，因为该短语的意思是"很短的距离"，所以答案应为B。像这种不使用计量单位描述物体的情况还有很多。例如：

　　He is of medium height.他中等身材。

　　I'm going to buy some tins of meat.我想去买几罐肉。

　　The train runs at a top speed.火车全速行驶。

　　Beijing is a densely populated city.北京人口密度很大。

　　The density of lead is greater than that of wood.铅的密度比木头大。

　　She has twice his courage.她的胆量比他大一倍。

　　以上这些表达法在各类听力测试题中是很常见的，属于间接的数字类问题，所以也要注意掌握。

　　二、明确如何准确表达数的概念。

　　计量的概念不只限于某些具体的计量单位，还应涵盖数的准确表达方式。例如：

　　A total of 326 people died in the earthquake.地震死亡的总人数为326人。

　　The profit made by the firm totaled $500,000.公司利润总额达五十万美元。

　　The train arrived at exactly 9 o'clock.火车九点整到达。

　　There are some 60 students in this class.班里学生人数大约为60人。

　　He will come out in approximately 15 minutes.大约15分钟后他就会出来了。

　　The cost will approximate $ 300.大概花费了300美元。

　　The cost of our meals averaged $ 8 a day.我们每天饭费平均是8美元。

　　On average, I receive 3 letters a month.我平均每月收到3封信。

　　He smokes a maximum of 10 cigarettes a day.他每天最多抽10支烟。

　　其实，这类表达法还有很多。像amount to，add up to，in total等均有"合计"的意思；而about，roughly，probably，more or less等均表示"大致的估计"。

　　总之，数字问题的复杂性使其成为听力测试中的重点和难点。学习者要在准确掌握各种数字表达法的同时，加强练习，只有这样才能攻克数字难关。
