"简单"与"详细"是一对在概念上相对的常用词。在现代汉语里，这一对词既能作形容词，又能作副词用。作形容词用时，要加结构助词"的"；作副词用时，则应加另一结构助词"地"。本文探索的重点是这对词作副词用时的常见英译法。

　　(一)"详细地"常见英译法

　　(1)译为短语in detail

　　detail是一个在含义上与"详细地"直接对应的词，在不同的句中，可分别作"细目"、"细节"或"详情"解。in detail是一个具有状语功有的短语，主要修饰动词。例如：in great detail(非常详细地)；in every detail(极为详细地，详详细细地)。例句：

　　The doctor asked about the symptoms in great detail. 医生非常详细地询问了病症。

　　In his letter the Negro athlete described in detail what he had seen in China. 在信中这位黑人运动员详细地描述了他在中国所看到的一切。

　　As to the use of subjunctive mood, I'll deal with it in detail later. 至于虚拟语气的用法，我以后再详细地讲。

　　The method is to be described in detail. 这个方法将予以详细说明。

　　注：有些带detail的动词短语也能与汉语副词"详细地"形成等值对应关系。试看：

　　Please record whatever it is at the scene and come back to give us full details. 请把现场的一切记录下来，回来后详细地讲给我们听。

　　(2)译为短语：1)at length 2) at large 3) in full

　　上述三个短语都能与汉语副词"详细地"形成等值对应关系并多用于口语。就结构而言，at length与at large和in full不同，前者是由介词加名词构成的，而后者是由介词加形容词构成的。这一差异决定了上述三个短语的使用特点，即在length前可加表明程度的修饰语。例如：at great length非常详细地，at full length极详细地，at some length较详细地。

　　例句：

　　The teachers explained the text at length. 教师们详细地讲解课文。

　　He spoke at great length on these questions. 他非常详细地论述了这些问题。

　　Please describe the circumstances in full. 请把情况详细地描述一下。

　　We shall discuss the subject at large. 我们将要详细地讨论这一课题。

　　(3)译为副词minutely

　　minutely有二种截然不同的注音：

　　[`minitli]和[mai`nju:tli]。不同的注音是为了表达不同的含义而存在的。按第一种注音读，minutely与名词minute有关，即表明的是"一小时或一度的六十分之一"这样一个意思。按第二种注音读，minute是形容词，意为"详细的，细致的"，例如：a minute description(细致的描写)。因而作汉语副词"详细地"对应词使用的minutely的正确读音自然应为[mai`nju:tli]。minutely为书面语。例句：

　　Please describe the main characteristies of the present international situation minutely. 请把目前国际形势的主要特点详细地描述一下。

　　The manager responded minutely to the questions. 经理详细地回答了这些问题。

　　(二)"简单地"常见英译法

　　(1)译为短语in brief

　　in brief是一个与in detail在表意上相对，而在结构、功能和其他使用特色等方面又有相似之处的短语。in brief除了常作状语性修饰语外，还能作后置定语用，修饰名词。例如：News in brief(简讯)。in brief位于句首时，又常有承上启下的作用。这时in brief的作用近似插入语，因此要用逗号分开。例句：

　　Please tell us the story in brief. 请你简单地把故事讲给我们听听。

　　In brief, the matter stands thus. 简而言之，事情是这样。

　　(2)译为短语

　　1) in short 2) in one word

　　in short 在表意上与in full相对，但在具体功能和其他方面又与in full有许多共同点。in short 位于句首时也有承上启下的作用。in short和in one word均多用于口语。例句：

　　Please describe the circumstances in short. 请把情况简单地描述一下。

　　Tell me in one word what you want? 简而言之，你要什么？

　　(3)译为briefly或brief(动词)

　　briefly是一个在含义或词性上均与"简单地"直接对应的常用词，通用于口语、书面语。而brief作动词用时，也兼有此意，相当于汉语的"作简要指点(介绍)"一类含义。例句：

　　The director responded briefly to the questions. 导演对这些问题简要地作了回答。

　　Our commander briefed us on the attack plan. 我们的司令把进攻的计划简要地向我们作了介绍。

　　注：在口语中，动词brief所表达的这层含义，又可借用短语give a brief account of...表示。试比较：Our commander gave us a brief account of the attack.
