In 1933 an unknown American called Clarence Nash went to see the filmmaker Walt Disney.① He had an unusual voice and wanted to work in Disneys cartoon films for children. When Walt Disney heard his voice, he said, “Stop! Thats our duck!”

The duck was the nowfamous Donald Duck, who first appeared in 1934 in the film The Wise Little Hen. Donald lived in an old houseboat and wore his sailor jacket and hat. Later that year he became a star after an eightminute Mickey Mouse film. The cinema audience liked him because he was very lazy and greedy (贪婪) ,and because he lost his temper(脾气)very quickly. And they loved his voice when he became angry with Mickeys eight nephews (侄子). Soon Donald was more popular than Mickey Mouse himself, probably because he wasnt a goodygoody like Mickey.②

In the 1930s, 40s and 50s, Donald and his friends Mickey, Goofy and Pluto made hundreds of Disney cartoons. He also made educational(教育的)films about the place of the USA in the world, and safety in the home. Then in 1966 Donald Duck and his voice disappeared. There were no more new cartoons.

Clarence Nash died in February 1987. But todays children can still see the old cartoons on television and hear that famous voice.

Around the world more and more people are taking part in dangerous sports and activities. Of course, there have always been people who have looked for adventure—those who have climbed the highest mountains, travelled into unknown parts of the world or sailed in small boats across the greatest oceans. Now, however, there are people who look for an immediate excitement from a risky (冒险的) activity which may only last a few minutes or even seconds.

I would consider bungee jumping (蹦极跳) to be a good example of such an activity. You jump from a high place with a rubber rope tied to your ankles. You fall at up to 150 kilometers an hour until the rope stops you from hitting the ground.① It is said that about 2 million people around the world have now tried bungee jumping. Other activities which most people would say are risky as bungee jumping include jumping from tall buildings and diving into the sea from the top of the high cliffs (悬崖).

Why do people take part in such activities as these? Some psychologists (心理学家) suggest that it is because life in modern societies has become safe and boring. According to many people, life offers little excitement.② They live and work in comparatively(相对地)safe conditions; they buy food in shops; and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill. The answer for some of these people is to look for danger in activities such as bungee jumping.

  根据文章内容,选择正确答案:

  1. The best title for the passage is____ .

  A. Dangerous sports: What and Why

  B. The Boredom (无聊) of Modern life

  C. Bungee Jumping: Is It Really Dangerous

  D. The Need for Excitement

  2. In bungee jumping , you ____.

  A. jump as high as you can

  B. move down a rope to the ground

  C. tie yourself to a rope and fall to the ground

  D. fall towards the ground without a rope

  3. People probably take part in dangerous sports nowadays because____.

  A. they have a lot of free time

  B. they can go to hospital if they are injured

  C. their life is short of excitement

  D. they can buy food in shops and no longer need to hunt for food
