To Give Up 放弃

I am a student in Henan University. I’m a bit confused about some words: abandon, desert, relinquish, forsake, resign and give up. Their Chinese meaning is too similar so I don't know which is the most relevant to use in English. I want to know how to use them properly.

Our question this week is about some English words that are very similar in meaning, just like their meaning in Chinese.

They are all to do with giving up something but they have some subtle differences so it's good to know the most relevant word to use when describing a situation.

Join Rob and Helen in Question and Answer of the Week as they explain and give examples of using these words.

House

The house was empty, the people who lived there had deserted it.

See if you can tell the difference between abandoning something and forsaking something.
