  Conversation A

Beth is an American student. Her cousin Dean is visiting her, and she has taken him to Tihua Street market.

Dean: This is a happening place. I haven’t seen crowds like this since I went to a World Series game.

Beth: Well, it is Chinese New Year, and this street is kind of like an exhibition.

  Dean: What do you mean?

Beth: As a New Year’s shopping street, it goes back more than a century, and no other market in town draws so many people at this time of year.

Dean: I don’t see too many people buying stuff right now. Are they waiting till the prices go down at the last minute?

Beth: A lot of people are just here to look. They’re here to attend an event rather than go on a serious shopping expedition.

  Conversation B

Dean: I see the food vendors are pretty generous with their samples. That’s nice.

Beth: Yeah! My Chinese teacher says it’s possible to stuff yourself3 here without spending a cent.

Dean: Wow! No wonder this place is bustling. You can come and eat for free!

Beth: Not everyone is here to eat, though, so watch out.

  Dean: For pickpockets, you mean?

Beth: Yes, otherwise you might need to eat for free for the rest of your vacation.

Dean: I’ll keep that in mind.

  Translation-Conversation A

  Translation-Conversation B
