  General information

  1. What is IELTS?

  IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It is jointly owned by UCLES, the British Council and IDP Education Australia. It is an English language proficiency test available world-wide. It tests the 4 main areas of language proficiency: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Within China IELTS is administered by the IELTS Network, a partnership between the British Council and IDP Education Australia. The exams are held at 23 test centres throughout the country. These are well-known universities.

  2. What is IELTS useful for?

  IELTS can be used for overseas study and/or immigration purposes. It is also used for entrysintossome professions in Australia and UK.

  3. Which institutions accept IELTS scores?

  Most institutions in UK, Australia, New Zealand, and many institutions in Canada and Europe accept IELTS scores. An increasing number of universities in the United States also accept IELTS. For more detailed information about exact institutions, please refer to www.ielts.org.

  4. What level of English must a candidate have insgroupsto apply for IELTS?

  There is no required English language level, but IELTS is an examination only for those people who have studied English for a number of years. In addition, IELTS is generally not suitable for people under 16 years of age.

  Registration

  1. Which module should I take, Academic or General Training?The Academic module is usually taken by those who want to study overseas in the medium of English. The module assesses whether a candidate is ready to study or train in the medium of English at an undergraduate or postgraduate level on courses which are of at least one year.

  The General Training module is usually taken by those people planning to train on short-term courses, undertake work experience in the medium of English, emigrate to countriesswheresIELTS is required as proof of English ability, or for those people wishing to complete secondary education. This module is not designed to test the full range of formal language skills required for academic purposes on courses of one year or more.

  If a candidate is undecided whether to apply for overseas study or immigration, they should apply for the Academic module as this is also accepted by Immigration Offices.

  2. How many exams are there in one year?

  There are tests every month at large centres. In some cases, additional test dates may be added to meet current demands. Please go to test dates page to find the details.

  3. When should I register?

  Generally speaking you should apply for the test months before the test date. Please refer to IELTS Latest News to learn about registration dates for the forthcoming sessions in China.

  4.swherescan I register?

  You can register at any of our registered test centres.It is suggested that you take the test within your region. You must bring the test fee, your identity card and three recent photographs. When you do the exam you must bring the same identity card. If you can not, you must contact either the local test center or British Council in advance. If you fail to do so you might not be allowed to take the examination.

  5. Is there a letter of confirmation for candidates?

  Yes. When a candidate applies for the examination, the test centre will issue a letter of confirmation to the candidate, informing him/her of all the necessary details about taking the examination.

  6. Can I cancel a test?

  For requests received at least 10 working days before the test date, we will refund 500 RMB. For requests within 10 working days of the test, there is no refund. Note that a working day is from Monday to Friday inclusive.

  7. Are there any IELTS materials for sale?

  Yes.

  ‘How to Prepare for IELTS’(book and 1 cassette) 89.9RMB. The Chinese edition is available at many bookstores in China.‘Specimen Materials’(Pack and 1 CD) 140RMBThis is available at all the BC offices andtest centres.

  8. Which modules are these materials for?

  In our experience, they are all useful for both the Academic and General Training modules.

  9. Can I transfer the date of the test?

  Yes, you can, but you must complete a Transfer Slip and pay 500RMB to the Test Centres at least 10 working days before the test. Transfers are not permitted within 10 working days of the test.

  10. Are there any IELTS preparation courses?

  The British Council in China does not offer any IELTS preparation courses. It also does not recognise any of the courses that are available.

  Examinations

  1. What is my candidate number?

  It is a four-digit number printed on the label which will be attached to the back of your ID during the check in procedure, on the day of the test.

  2. What can the candidate bringsintosthe examination room?Only candidates’ID, wooden pencils, an eraser and a pencil sharpener. You can not bring a mobile phonesintosthe examination room. If you do, that is regarded as cheating and you will be told to leave the examination and you will not receive a test report form. When you register you will receive the Candidate Rules, in both English and Chinese. You must read these carefully and sign to say that you accept them. If you break the rules you will be told to leave the examination room, and you will not receive a test report form.

  3. Can the candidate finish the IELTS test in one day?

  The Speaking exam can be on the Saturday afternoon or the Sunday, so it is important that you are free for two full days. Due to the increasing number of candidates, there is a possibility that the Speaking exam will be held on Monday at some test centres. For those candidates from other cities, we will try not to arrange the Speaking exam on Monday, but we cannot guarantee this.

  4. What kind of accents can be heard in the Listening and Speaking tests?

  As this is the International English Language Testing System, a variety of English accents are used in both of these examinations. This is because the English you would hear in the English-speaking countries of the world could be of many varieties.

  5. Does the listening tape provide the candidate with necessary pauses and instructions?

  Yes. The tape lasts for approximately 40 minutes. During the test candidates read the questions for section one. They then listen to the first section and answer the questions on the question paper as they listen. The same happens for sections two, three and four. All of this takes about 30 minutes. For the final ten minutes candidates transfer their answers onto the answer sheet.

  6. Can the candidate stop the tape to adjust it once it has started?

  No. When the tape starts, the candidates will hear the instructions and an example. This helps to get them accustomed to the voices on the cassette, and to allow for adjustments to the volume to a comfortable level for everybody.

  7. Is there a similar period of ten minutes at the end of the Reading exam for the transfer of answers?

  No. You must make sure all your answers are on the answer sheet by the time the Reading test finishes. It lasts for one hour.

  8. What should I do if I write the Listening and Reading answers on the wrong sides of the answering sheet?

  Please inform an invigilator as soon as possible.

  9. During the Reading test can I correct the answers for the listening test?

  No, you must not. This is cheating because the Listening test has finished.

  10. Can I fill in the answer sheet with pen?

  No, you must use wooden pencil.

  11. Can I make some notes on the question paper?

  Yes, you can, the examiner will not mark your question paper, but only for the answer sheet.

  12. In the Writing paper what happens if I write the answer for Task 1 on the page for Task 2?

  Please inform an invigilator as soon as possible.

  13. What’s the Speaking test?

  Speaking is assessed through a face to face interview with a certified examiner, which is recorded on an audiocassette.

  14. What should the candidate bring for the Speaking test?

  The candidate needs to bring the same identification documents, as these must be checked again against the information on the application form. They will be checked by the administrator prior to the candidate entering the interview room and by the Speaking examiner.

  After the test

  1. What happens if a candidate loses their Test Report Form?

  At any time within two years of the day of the examination, a candidate can apply to the British Council that administered the test for 5 copies of the Test Report Form free of charge. For any further copies, there is a small administrative charge of 60RMB per copy.

  2. What does the Test Report Form consist of?

  Scores are recorded on the Test Report Form along with details of the candidate’s nationality, first language, date of birth and ID number.

  3. How is the score represented?

  IELTS provides four scores for each of the skills (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking). There is also an overall score. All scores are reported on a nine-band scale, nine is the highest.

  4.When will the candidate receive their results?

  The candidates will received their Test Report Forms with one month after they finished their test. The British Council will issue the Test Report Forms to the test centres after 10 working days.

  5. How soon can candidate repeat the test?

  Candidates are not allowed to repeat the test within three months.

  6. Who will handle complaints and suggestions regarding IELTS test?

  The registered test centre and British Council deal with all the complaints and suggestions from the candidates.

  8. Can the candidate request a re-mark if they think their marks are not accurate?

  Yes. Candidates need to pay RMB690 to the British Council, accompanied by a photocopy of his/her Test Report Form and a re-mark application letter. This must be written in English. All the test scripts of the candidate, including the interview tape, will be sent to The British Council headquarters in UK. This procedure takes about at least two months. The equivalent of 40 GBP is re-funded if the re-marking results in an increase in the band score.

  9. Is the marking of writing papers subjective?

  The qualified examiners mark to a standardised marking scheme. They receive careful training for this, and are regularly monitored.

  10. Can I check my writing answer sheet after it is marked?

  No.

  11. Can I apply to send the Test Report Form to other institutions?

  Yes. We can send an additional 5 Test Report Forms for you free of charge to academic institutions abroad, Embassies or Consulates of other countries. If you need more than 5 additional Test Report Forms, to be sent to academic institutions abroad, Embassies or Consulates of other countries, you will need to pay RMB 50 for each. Unfortunately, we cannot send other Test Report forms to you directly. Please click here to check detailed procedures.

  12. How can I check whether my application to send extra Test Report Form has been handled or not?

  Candidates who have requested us to send extra Test Report Forms can check on-line whether they have been sent out. Please see page Record of Sending Extra Test Report Form for detailed information. This form is updated on a weekly basis. We usually keep all records on-line 8 weeks after sending out the forms and delete the outdated ones on a regular basis.

  4、申请雅思考试的考生必须具备什么样的英语水平?

  在英语水平方面没有要求,但雅思考试仅适用于经过多年的英语学习并具备一定语言基础的人。另外,雅思考试一般不适合16岁以下的考生。

  报名

  1、我应该参加哪一类的考试,学术类还是培训类?

  学术类雅思考试适用于以英语为工具去海外留学的考生,专门测试考生是否具备在英语环境中完成至少一年的本科或硕士课程的学习或培训的能力。

  培训类雅思考试适用于以英语为工具到国外接受短期培训、或到英语国家工作、或移民国外并被要求提交雅思成绩以证明英语语言能力,或希望到国外完成中学教育的考生。培训类考试不适用于那些想去学习一年或一年以上课程并需要测试全面语言水平的考生。

  如果考生暂时无法决定是申请留学还是移民,可以参加学术类的考试,学术类的成绩移民局也可以接受。

  2、每年会举行多少次考试?

  在主要的考试中心,每个月都会有考试。有时为了满足考生的需要还会额外增加考试。请查看考试日期页面了解最新信息。

  3、我应该何时开始报名?

  一般来说在北京您需要提前几个月开始报名。请参考 雅思考试最新消息了解中国区考试的最新报名信息。

  4、我应该在何处报名?

  您可以在我们任何一个考试中心报名。建议在您所在的地区报名。报名时请携带考试报名费、身份证件及近照三张。考试当日,您必须使用同一张身份证件参加考试。如果有变化,请务必提前通知考试中心或英国使馆文化处,否则您会被禁止参加考试。

  5、报名后考生是否会得到准考证?

  是的。考生报名考试时,考试中心会发给考生准考证,通知其考试的具体要求和详情。

  6、我可以取消考试吗?

  对于在考试前10个工作日以上收到的退考申请,我们可以返还考生500元人民币。但如果在考前10个工作日之内接到的申请,我们将不退款。请注意工作日指的是周一至周五的工作时间。

  7、是否有雅思考试的资料?

  是的。《如何准备雅思考试》包括一本书和一盘磁带,价格为89.9人民币。其中文版在全国各大书店有售。

  《雅思考试模拟试题》包括一本信息册和一盘CD,价格为140人民币。该资料在英国使领馆文化教育处各办公室考试中心有售。

  8、这些资料适用于哪一类的考试?

  根据我们的经验,这些资料对学术类和培训类的考生都有帮助。

  9、我可以改变考试的日期吗?

  可以,但您必须填好考试改期表并至少在考试前提前10个工作日到考试中心,支付500元完成改期。若在考前10个工作日之内,改期是不允许的。

  10、我们是否提供考前培训?

  英国文化委员会中国办公室不开办考前培训,也不对目前社会上的辅导班进行认可。

  考试

  1、我的考号是什么?

  在考试当天进场时,您的身份证件背后贴的标签上的四位数字的号码就是您的考号。

  2、考生在考试时可以带什么入场?

  只能带您的身份证件、木杆铅笔,一个转笔刀和一块橡皮。您不能携带移动电话入场,如果发现将以作弊处理,您将会被要求退场并没有成绩。当您报名时,您会收到一份中英文的考生须知,您务必认真阅读并签字接受这些规定。如果您在考试中违反了规定,您将必须退场,并且不会收到考试成绩。

  3、考生是否可以在一天内完成全部的考试?

  口试的时间有可能在周六下午或在周日,所以您应做好准备需要两天完成考试。近来由于考生人数激增,在一些考试中心有可能将口试安排在周一。对于来自外地的考生,我们会尽量避免但也不排除将口试安排在周一。

  4、在听力和口试中可能会听到什么地方的口音?

  因为雅思考试是国际英语语言测试考试,所以在其两类考试中会包含各式口音的英语。原因在于在不同的英语国家,您能听到的口音也各有不同。

  5、听力磁带中是否录有必要的停顿和说明?

  是的。听力磁带长约40分钟。在考试时磁带会提示先让考生阅读第一部分的问题,然后开始听第一部分的内容并答题。第二、三和四部分也是一样。所有的听力题目历时30分钟,最后10分钟留给考生将答案誊写到答题纸上。

  6、在开始播放听力磁带后,考生是否可以要求停止播放?

  不可以。磁带开始播放后,考生可以先听到考试说明及一个例题。这些可以帮助考生习惯磁带中的声音,考官可以将音量调节到适合大家的最舒适的程度。

  7、在阅读考试结束后,是否还有额外的10分钟可以用来誊写答案?

  没有。您必须在阅读考试结束前将所有答案誊写到答题纸上,阅读部分的考试时间只有一个小时。

  8、如果我把阅读和听力部分的答案写反了,应该怎么办?

  请立即通知考场内的考官。

  9、在阅读考试期间,我是否可以修改听力部分的答案?

  不可以。这是作弊行为,因为听力考试已经结束。

  10、我是否可以用钢笔答题?

  不可以,您必须使用木杆铅笔。

  11、我是否可以在答卷上做标注?

  可以,但考官只会对答题纸上的答案评分,不会考虑标注的内容。

  12、在写作的作文纸上,如果我把第一题错写在第二题的位置怎么办?

  请立即通知考场内的考官。

  13、什么是口试?

  口试是由一位经认证的考官经过面对面的测试评估考生的语言水平,口试的过程会被录制在磁带上。

  14、在口试中考生应该带什么?

  考生需要携带与笔试相同的证明资料,因为我们仍需要与报名表中的资料核对。在考生进入口试教室之前,考场管理人员和口试考官都会检查这些文件。

  考试后

  1、如果考生的成绩单丢失怎么办?

  自考试结束之日的两年内,考生可以在任何时间向英国文化委员会申请免费寄送五份成绩,超出五份的部分每份要收取60元的手续费。

  2、考试成绩单中包括什么?

  成绩单上记录了考生各项的考试成绩,并写明了考生的国籍、母语,生日和身份证件号。

  3、考试成绩代表什么?

  雅思考试的成绩分为四个单项成绩(听力、阅读、写作和口语)和一个总平均分。所有的部分都是9分制,满分为9分。

  4、考生什么时候可以收到考试成绩?

  考生将在考试结束后一个月内收到成绩单。英国文化委员会将在考试后10个工作日将成绩寄往各考试中心。

  5、考生在何时可以再次报名考试?

  考生不允许在三个月内重复参加考试。

  6、何处负责接收有关雅思考试的投诉和建议?

  各考试中心和英国使馆文化教育处负责授理考生的各种投诉及建议。

  7、如果考生认为成绩不准确,是否可以要求重新判卷?

  可以。考生需要向英国使馆文化教育处另外付690元,并附上一份其成绩单的复印件及重判申请信。申请信需要用英文书写。之后,所有的考卷包括口试记录将会被寄往英国文化委员会英国总部。整个过程至少历时2个月,如果重判的结果比原判的成绩高,英国使馆文化教育处将退返给考生等值于40英镑的费用。

  8、考官判卷是否客观?

  拥有相应资历的考官都是根据标准的判分制度进行阅卷。考官为此接受过认真的培训,并定期接受检查。

  9、我是否可以在分数出来后查阅自己的试卷?

  不可以。

  10、我是否可以申请将考试成绩单寄往其他的机构?

  可以。我们可以免费为考生向海外院校、其他国家的使领馆寄送5份成绩单。如果你需要在此基础上额外寄送,你需要每份另外支付60元。但是,我们不能将额外的成绩单直接寄给您本人。

  11、我如何了解我要求寄送额外成绩单的申请是否已经实现?

  申请寄送额外成绩单的考生可以在网上查询成绩单是否已经寄出。请访问额外成绩单寄送记录页了解详细信息。此记录每周更新一次。我们一般将记录在寄出后在网上保留8周,并定期删去过期的记录。
