Manchester United reached the European Champions League semifinals on Wednesday with a 3-2 victory over Deportivo La Coruna but David Beckham broke his footand could miss the first round of the World Cup.
The result meant that the Red Devils advanced on a 5-2 aggregate over two quarterfinal legs and will meet Germany's Bayer Leverkusen for a place in the final.
Beckham limped off in the 17th minute after a rough tackle from Aldo Pedro Duscher. Beckham, who was taken to the dressing room ona stretcher and then to a hospital, injured his left ankle last week in Spain after a reckless challenge from Deportivo's Diego Tristan.
"He is doubtful for the World Cup - I think that's doubtful," manager Alex Ferguson said. "He has a broken metatarsis bone in his foot. It's six to eight weeks and that's a blow for Manchester United."
That could mean Beckham would miss the threesgroupsgames at the World Cup against Sweden (June 2), Argentina (June 7) and Nigeria (June 12).
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, coming in as a substitute for injured David Beckham early in the match, scored in the 23rd and 55th. Ryan Giggs scored United's final goal in the 69th with a twisting left-footed shot in the box.
Manchester United defender Laurent Blanc scored an own-goal and Djalminha scored on a deflected free kick in the final seconds ofthe game.
