Susie goes for lunch at Pete’s Diner.
Pete: Hey there, Susie. The usual?
Susie: Pete, does your restaurant serve genetically modified food?
Pete: Oh, no. Are you turningsintosa New Age Luddite?1
Susie: No, I’m just trying to cut GM foods out of my diet. I don’t believe in them.
Pete: What’s not to believe in? Are you against increased yields for farmers or foods with enhanced nutritional value?
Susie: Neither. I just don’t like the potential downside.
Pete: I haven’t heard of any downside.
Susie: That’s the point. Nobody knows. Genetically modified foods have been foisted2 on an unwitting public without adequate testing.
Pete: But the technology being used will result in crops that thrive on nonarable3 land.
Susie: Yes, yes. They’ll contain more vitamins and will be more resistant to pests. I know the arguments.
Pete: And farmers can decrease their use of dangerous herbicides and pesticides. You have to like that.
Susie: Naturally, but those inherent defences could spread to plants in the same family and produce super weeds that would require even more toxic herbicides to control.
Pete: Susie, I think you’re overreacting.
Susie: Besides, I have food allergies. What if I eat some soybean product that’s spliced4 with Brazil nuts? I might have a reaction.
Pete:“Could”?“Might”?“What if? You’re paranoid.
Susie: It’s natural to fear the unknown when you’re stumbling in the dark.
