As the city begins to heat up for summer, some foreign residents will celebrate the beginning of the wet season in other Asian countries. Thai and Burmese workers will join locals, many of whom have lived in Thailand and Burma, in dousing each other with water. They will be celebrating the Thai and Burmese New Year with the annual Water Festival.

Splashing water about is the most important element of the festival. A water dousing is a symbolic cleansing, washing away any bad luck from the old year before the new one is ushered in. Though be advised: cameras and other electronic equipment benefit less from the water cleansing than their human owners. If you participate in the Water Festival, it might not be a bad idea to leave the camera at home.

If you are lucky enough to visit Thailand or Burma during the Water Festival, you may need a hot shower by the end of the day. One local Thai and Burmese custom is to rub white clay on the faces of passersby, giving random strangers a special gesture of goodwill for the New Year.
