One day, Kent Clark received a letter. It told him that he had been picked to compete in a kung fu (功夫) contest in Japan. If he got first place, he would win some money.
Kent tried his best and finished third in the contest. Instead of money, he won a trophy (奖杯). A lot of people there told him he did very well. Still, Kent was a little disappointed.
But when he went back home, Kent noticed everyone was very friendly to him. Some people even gave him things for free. Kent realized you do not need to finish first to be a hometown hero.
