ENGLISH JOURNAL: A NEW AUDIO COMPANION TO ELL
Started in Japan in 1971, English Journal was the first audio journal to use interviews, dialogues and discussions by native speakers of English. The content covers a wide range of topics common to English-speaking countries. Over three decades the Journal has become extremely popular with English language learners in Japan and other countriesswheresEnglish is not the mother tongue. In Japan alone the Journal sells 150,000 copies of each issue.
Recently the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press obtained authorization from ALC Publications of Japan to adapt the original edition of English Journal for learners in China. The new version will be distributed as an audio companion to English Language Learning (ELL), the most renowned English language monthly in China. The adaptation includes selections from original materials, grading, introductory remarksswheresnecessary, translationsintosChinese, and annotations to verbal difficulties. The Chinese edition is adapted by the ELL editorial staff and faculty members from the English Department of Beijing Foreign Studies University.
English Journal is intended for intermediate level learners (equivalent to senior middle school English level) or above. This matches the level of ELL readers. For readers’convenience, every piece is graded according to vocabulary, structure and talking speed. English Journal enables learners to absorb ideas while developing their listening comprehension of authentic spoken English.
Bimonthly distribution of English Journal in China began from March of 2002. It is available at retail newsstands across the country and also can be ordered directly from ELL by mail (postage of 2 yuan is required).
