Conversation A
Ruby sees her classmate Tony walking up the street toward her.
Ruby: Hey, Tony. Are you all right? You look really tired.
Tony: Gee, thanks, Ruby. You really know how to make a guy feel good.
Ruby: What? I’m just being honest.
Tony: I’ll let you in on a little secret.1 If somebody looks tired, they know it.
Ruby: Oh, right. I guess they don’t need to hear it from other people.
Conversation B
Tony: Why not give me a compliment2 instead?3 That would make me feel good.
Ruby: All right. I really like your haircut.4 But . . .
Tony: No buts! Again, you were just about to say something that was going to make me feel bad!
Ruby: What’s wrong with saying what I really think?
Tony: My mother always says,“If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.”
