在叙述过去的故事或发生的事情时用现在时，称为“历史现在时”或“戏剧现在时”。运用这种时态，可给人以身临其境的感觉，加强了故事的感染力。

　　【例如】

　　…Then the man in the mask pulls a revolver out of his pocket and raises it. I put up my hands. Then suddenly the man raises the mask and I see my best friend! It all was a joke………随后那个戴假面具的人从口袋里掏出左轮手枪，举了起来。我举起双手。这时那个人突然掀开了假面具，他原来是我最好的朋友。他是在跟我开玩笑哩……这种“历史现在时”可以用于一段或数段，但也可以用于一个句子。

　　【例如】I waited about fifteen minutes and out he comes.我等了大约15分钟，他出来了。在以下的情况中，人们也常用现在时代替过去时，表示过去发生的动作或存在的状态。

　　1)在日常谈话中，一个刚刚发生的动作可用一般现在时表示，因为说话人并不关注动作发生的时间。

　　【例如】

　　Mr. Smith says you are ill, is that true?The doctor tells me that I'll soon be all right again. I read in the papers that we are to send a education delegation to U.S. What wind blows you here?

　　Why do you come so late?

　　这种表过去的一般现在时可以和why, how, where, what等疑问词连用，但不可与when连用，因为when强调动作发生的时间。

　　2)有时，一般现在时也可以表示离现在较远的动作或状态。

　　【例如】

　　He is long dead.他早已去世了。How do you come to know her?你是怎么认识她的？Where do you get these ideas?你这些想法是哪儿来的？

　　3)在介绍书籍，电影情节，解说体育节目时，常用一般现在时代替过去时

　　【例如】The story is set in the hot summer of 1930.这个故事发生在1930年炎热的夏天。And Smith passes to Devaney, Devaney to Bernes, Bernes across to Luces—and Taylor interrupts. Taylor to Peters—and he shoots—and it's a goal!史密斯把球传给德瓦尼，德瓦尼传给巴恩斯，巴恩斯又给卢卡斯——泰勒断球，断球以后传给彼德斯——他射门——射中一球!

　　4)一般现在时常用来表示已死的人的动作或状态。

　　【例如】

　　Marx says that a foreign language is a weapon in the struggle of life.马克思说外语是人生斗争的武器。He leaves a wife and two children.他留下一个妻子和两个孩子。有时，人虽死而物犹在，也可用一般现在时。

　　【例如】In the letter she tells me why she was up there.在那封信里，他告诉我为什么她要上那儿去。(she已死，但信犹在。)This memorial is placed here by his friends and neighbors in testimony of respect, affection and gratitude.这个纪念碑是他的朋友与邻居树立在此的，以表其尊敬、爱戴和感激之意。(他和他的朋友与邻居早已死去，但纪念碑仍在。)
