　　The Johnsons are hosting Dale, a Chinese exchange student living with them for the summer in Toronto. Lani and Peter are their children.

　　Dale:Have you seen Peter around?

　　Lani:No. He took off after the trip to the lake.

　　Dale:Do you mind if I ask you something?

　　Lani:Go ahead.

　　Dale:I’m worried I did something that bothered him.

　　Lani:Why? What’s going on?

　　Dale:I think Peter is avoiding me.

　　Conversation B

　　Lani: Hmm. He probably just felt uncomfortable when you kept putting your arm around his shoulders.

　　Dale: Uncomfortable? But in China, good friends often do that. It shows that we’re close. I wasn’t trying to make him feel uncomfortable.

　　Lani: I know, but Peter probably doesn’t understand that you don’t want to be his boyfriend.

　　Dale: Oh my God! I certainly didn’t mean anything like that!
