  Conversation A

David rushes up to his mother, Anne, out of breath.

  David: Mom! Becky pinched me!

Anne: That's terrible! Where is that Becky? She's going to get a spanking!

David: She's out playing with her friends.

Anne: Wait a second! How could Becky have pinched you if she's not even in the house?

David: Well ... but she did!

Anne: David, tell me the truth. Did she pinch you or not?

David: No, but I've mad at her anyway. Becky won't let me play with her friends.

Anne: David, just because you're angry with your sister doesn't mean that you can lie to get even with her.

  Conversation B

David: But you sometimes lie, too. When Dad got you that ugly sweater for your birthday, you said you liked it!

Anne: That was a white lie. There's a difference.

  David: What do you mean?

Anne: Telling a lie to protect someone's feelings is OK. It would have hurt Dad if I'd said I hated the sweater.

David: Oh. So it's OK when I lied and said that I liked what you made me for lunch yesterday?

Anne: Er, yes. That would be fine.

David: Oh, all right then. Thanks for explaining, Mom. See you!

Anne: Hey,swheresdo you think you're going? You're still in trouble for lying about your sister!
