Put somebody/something off
1.to arrange to do something at a later time or date, especially because there is a problem, difficulty etc.推迟;拖延;延期。
Example: I feel ill; I’ll have to put off my visit/ put off going till next month.
举例:我身体不舒服,我将不得不推迟访问/到下个月才去。
我们需要注意一下的是put off的词组搭配:put off something or put something off; put off doing something.
2.to delay meeting someone, paying someone etc because you do not want to do it until later.设法使……等待;推脱;推诿;搪塞。
I put him off with a promise to pay him next week.
我搪塞他一下,答应下周还他钱。
3.to make you dislike something or not want to do something.
使厌恶。
Example: The job sounded interesting but the idea of moving house again put me off.
这份工作听上去很不错,但是要搬家的想法又让我感到烦心。
4.to make it difficult for someone to do something, by preventing them from thinking clearly about what they are doing.
使分心;使从……分心
Example: He’s thinking things over; you must do nothing to put him off.他正在细细考虑,你别弄得他分心。
5. to let someone leave a vehicle at a particular place.
在一个特定的地点让某人下车。
I’ll put you off at the bottom of the street.我在街的那头让你下车。
