Millions of people claim to have had NDEs, and many have described similar out-of-body and tunnel-into-light experiences. The scientific explanation for this is that the brain near death has become totally deprived of oxygen: In this state, it will naturally hallucinate such "scenes." An alternative explanation is religious: According to this point of view, the soul has actually left the body and entered another world-if only for a very short time-before being sent back, sometimes (survivors report) by a close relative or angelic "being of light." Scientists think it is reasonable that those who are certain they have gone to "heaven" will wish to make sense of their hallucinations in this way. Yet one point science cannot explain is this: Why are the relatives encountered during NDEs always dead ones? Surprisingly, some survivors report seeing living relatives who later turn out to have been already dead without their knowing it. |
