 Unit 18

Seeing the doctor

Passage 1

  阅读理解一

Dreams are images or thoughts that pass through our mind during sleep. Nightmares are dreams that frighten us.

We all dream. Adults probably dream about four times each night, but they do not usually remember their dreams.

Almost all children have nightmares and they often wake up feeling very frightened. Adults dont have nightmares as often as children.

No one knows! Some people say that our dreams organize the events of the day. Others say that we use our dream to help us solve problems. Some people believe that dreams predict the future.

Everyone wants to understand their dreams, but do dreams have meaning? Here are some common dreams, and their meanings:

Flying: You want to escape from everyday life. (People often feel happy after a dream about flying.)

Grass: Green grass means your life is going well, but brown grass means that youre not happy: are you depressed or worried about something?

Losing teeth: Youre afraid of losing someone close to you. (Or perhaps you should go to the dentist!)

Long hair: You want more freedom!

Fire: Youre very angry with someone. You should try to control your feelings.

Dreams are good for us, but we should try to avoid nightmares. You should try to relax before you go to bed and you shouldnt eat cheese or spicy food. You certainly shouldnt watch any horror films!

 Passage 4

  判断正误

Most people want to work, but it has become more difficult in todays world to find work for everybody. The economics of the world needs to grow by 4% each year just to keep the old number of jobs for people. Often this is not possible, and so more people are without work. Some people have no jobs now because new machines can do the work of many people in a shorter time. Also, machines do not ask for more money and longer holidays. In all of the countries of the world machines are taking work from people, not only in factories but also on farms. One machine can often do the work of forty people. About 75000 people are moving to the cities a day to look for jobs, but only 70% of them can find jobs.
