　　BECKY's BIRTHDAY PRESENT

　　December 21 was Becky's fourteenth birthday. When she got home after

　　1She thought that her present must be in the box.

　　情态动词must除了表示“必须”“应该”之意外，还可表示推测，有“必定”“一定”之意，此句就是表示推测，例如：

　　She must be over twenty.

　　她一定有二十多了。

　　Mr Hu must be at home.

　　胡先生肯定在家。

　　2There was nothing but a card in it.

　　but在这里不是连词，而是介词，意为“除了”。nothing/nobody...but...意为“除……外，没有……”，相当于only“只有”。例如：

　　I have nothing to give you but these books.=I have only these books to give you.

　　Nobody knows it but us.=Only we know it.

　　除了我们以外没有人知道这件事。

　　3The girl took it out and read.

　　take out意为“拿出，取出”。例如：

　　Jim took out his dictionary and looked up the word.

　　吉姆拿出字典查单词。

　　Boys and girls, take out your exercise books, please.

　　同学们，请把练习本拿出来。

　　◆注意◆宾语是代词时，应放在out之前。例如：

　　Take it out.把它拿出来。

　　4My first three letters are the same as in the word‘come’.

　　the same as意为“和……一样”。例如：

　　The two sisters look the same as each other.

　　两姐妹长得一样。

　　My watch is the same as yours.

　　我的表和你的一样。
