In the early part of the twentieth century, racism was widespread in the United States. Many African-Americans were not given equal opportunities in education or employment. Marian Anderson(1897-1993) was an African- American woman who gained fame as a concert singer in this climate of racism. She was born in Philadelphia and sang in church choirs during her childhood. When she applied for admission to a local music school in 1917, she was turned down because she was black. Unable to attend music school, she began her career as a singer for church gatherings. In 1929, she went to Europe to study voice and spent several years performing there. Her voice was widely praised throughout Europe. Then she returned to the US in 1935 and became a top concert singer after performing at the Town Hall in New York City.

Racism again affected Anderson in 1939. When it was arranged for her to sing at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., the daughters of the American Revolution opposed it because of her color. She sang instead at the Lincoln Memorial for over 75,000 people. In 1955, Anderson became the first black soloist(独唱者) to sing with the Metropolitan Opera of New York City. The famous conductor Toscanini praised her voice as "heard only once in a hundred years". She was a US delegate(代表) to the United Nations in 1958 and won the UN peace prize in 1977. Anderson eventually triumphed(获得胜利) over racism.

Conjoined twins lead separate but active lives

Lori and Reba Schappell have never been alone and they want to keep it that way.

The 40-year-old conjoined twins in Pennsylvania, US, have read about others locked together by an accident of birth who have been medically separated. But they insist only death can part them.

"We've never imagined a life divided," Lori said.

Lori and Reba are joined together at the side of their heads, facing in opposite directions. Their blood supply is partly linked, but each has a separated brain.

Reba suffers from a disease which has left her completely dependent on her sister.

Lori wheels her everywhere they go in a specially designed chair.

They both attended college, then went in different professional directions. Lori worked in a laundry room at a hospital for six years before giving that up to allow Reba to try to become a country singer.

Her first song is called "The Fear of Being Alone," which was inspired (启示)by Reba and Lori's desire for togetherness.

Reba's career has taken her across the United States, Europe and parts of Asia.

While the twins receive some money from the government, the earnings from Reba's concerts go to AIDS and cancer charities (慈善机构).

The sisters have set goals for themselves. Reba looks forward to a successful career as a country singer, while Lori said she hopes to get married and have children of her own.

"I'm not the only woman at age 40 not to have children," Lori said. "So when it comes, it comes." Meanwhile, "I live wonderfully from day to day."

  E

Many years from now, a group of people may board a spacecraft. They will head into space to live together in a new place, or colony. After a few days, they will arrive at their new home, a colony called L5 . L5 is the scientific name for the colony's position in space in relation to Earth and the moon.

At the L5 location, the force of gravity of the moon exactly balances the force of gravity of Earth. This balance keeps the space colony in a stable, or steady, orbit.

The colonists on L5 would feel weightless, as if they were floating. To solve this "floating people" problem, L5 spins in space. This spinning provides the colony with a force that feels like the pull of gravity. This force gives the colonists a feeling of having weight, just as gravity does on Earth,

Inside L5, colonists will see many of the sights they left behind on Earth. There is also much work to do. Some people will be busy providing everyday necessities for human life. Solar engineers will be building sun power stations. In these stations, the sun's energy will be collected, changed into another form of energy, and sent back to Earth. This source of energy could be one answer to Earth's future energy needs.

  72. L5 will spin slowly to provide ______ .

  A. a kind of gravity for the colony

  B. another source of energy for the colony

  C. protection for its colony

  D. all above

  73. L5 is a point located ______ .

  A. half the distance between Earth and the moon

  B. where the pull of the moon equals the pull of Earth

  C. halfway between the moon and the sun

  D. all away about the moon

  74. L5 will get its name from its ______ .

  A. position in space

  B. unusual shape

  C. source of power

  D. usual shape

  75. What problem on Earth may be solved by building solar power stations in space?

  A. The energy shortage.

  B. The need for more space.

  C. Our need for gravity.

  D. Our help for more room.

  高二下学期期中测试题参考答案

  第一部分:录音原文:

Part One You'll hear five dialogues. Listen carefully and choose the correct answer for each question.

1.W:What can I do for you?

M:Would you please pass me that book on the shelf? I want to buy one for my wife.

2.W:What's the latest news about Bill?

M:I talked to him last night on the phone. He said he was feeling better and would be back home tomorrow.

  3.M:How old are you, Mary?

  W:I'm 19.

M:And how old are your brothers and sisters?

W:My sister Sally is 19, too. We're twins. My brother Sam is 22 and my other brother Max is 15. Janet, my elder sister, is 29.

4.M:What about having a party this Sunday evening?

  W:Where shall we have it?

  M:In Tina's flat.

5.W:My car has never been running right since I bought it last month.

M:Why don't you turn to Bill for help. He's been a driver since I first knew him five years ago.

Part Two You'll hear a dialogue. Listen carefully, then choose the correct answer for each question.

M:Look, we must make some plans. We don't really want to drive four hundred miles to Edinburgh, do we? Why don't we fly? It only takes about an hour.

W:Because we must have the car when we're there. Anyway, it's only 378 miles from London actually.

M:Clever! But couldn't we travel around by train or bus? Why do we need the car?

W:Well, the point is, we'd have much more freedom if we had the car. And we could camp, which would be cheaper. Ken said they'd lend us their tent, because they're going back to that cottage in the Lakes.

M:In that case, we can put the car on the train.

  W:No, we can't.

M:Why not? The thing is, if we drive all the way to Edinburgh, we'll be tired before we get there, and...

W:Look, let me explain. I'd love to travel on the sleeper, but it's too expensive for us.

M:Oh, well, I suppose you're right. We'll drive. Maybe we could stay a night in Newcastle on the way.

Part Three You'll hear a passage. Listen carefully and choose the correct answer for each question.

Thank you for calling the National Zoo, one of the most important animal parks in the world. It was first opened over a century ago in 1889 and today the collection contains around 3,000 animals, a number which is increasing all the time.We hope you will decide to visit us and now we'll give you some information to help you to find us and to find your way around when you get here. The zoo can be found in north-west Washington. It can be reached easily by public transport,by bicycle or by car. At weekends and holiday times spaces may be filled by 10:00 a.m. The zoo is open every day except Christmas day, and it's hard to believe, but entrance is free for both adults and children. The park is open from 8:00 a.m. and most of the buildings are open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Thank you for calling ,come and see us soon!

Part Four You'll hear a passage. Listen carefully and judge whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F).

E-mail is a new way of communication in the world. It is a means of "meeting" people with similar research interests or problems. E-mailers "write" letters on their computers, then send them through their telephone lines to another one far away who has got a computer. E-mail addresses, either names or numbers, allow mail to be sent to the right places. E-mailing is not a live conversation, but is unlike the usual mail service. Replies can be received at once or within hours, depending on how often the receiver checks his computer.

Sending e-mail is far cheaper than making long distance calls. In the past, when the telephone service became more convenient and effective, people made calls instead of writing letters. Now e-mail has brought people back to their grammar, vocabulary, and spelling as their fingers dance over the keyboard of their computer.

E-mailing brings people together and makes the world even smaller.

  Part One 1-5 ABACB

  One possible version:

The Chinese people have been dreaming of going into space for a long time. In the years 1999 to 2002 China sent up three unmanned spacecrafts successfully. On Dec. 31,2002, the launch of the fourth space craft"Shenzhou IV" was another big success and the spacecraft returned to the earth safely on January 5,2003. During its flight, seven scientific experiments were carried out. The purpose of this flight is to make preparations for the launch of manned spacecraft next time. The successful launch and return shows that China is able to send a person into space. In 2003, the first manned spacecraft was launched on the fifteenth of Oct. 2003. The spacecraft spent 21 hours in circling the earth in orbit 21 times. Yang Liwei was the first Chinese astronaut. This successful flight shows that China is the third country in the world which has the ability to send up a manned spaceship into space.
