复杂多变的比较结构既是大学英语基础阶段的学习重点之一，也是近年来大学英语四、六级考试考查的主要内容，同时在英文写作以及修辞方面更是不可忽视的重要环节。该考点看似简单，实则不然，在考试时许多同学容易在这一环节失分。与than相关的短语是比较结构中的命题重点。如：2003年12月CET-4第60题：When I go out in the evening, I use the bike the car if I can.

　　本文拟就与than有关的短语予以归纳，供同学们备考。

　　1. rather than

　　①rather than与would, had等词连用，表主观愿望，意为"宁愿……而不愿……"，后面接不带to的动词不定式。

　　He had rather go than stay to be interviewed.他宁愿走，也不愿留下来接受采访。

　　Rather than travel by air, I'd prefer a week on a big liner.我宁愿乘一周的巨型班轮，也不愿坐飞机。

　　②rather than也可以连接与谓语动词时态一致的动词形式，表示客观事实，而不是主观愿望，解释为"是……而不是……"。

　　He stayed rather than went.他留下来没走。

　　③rather than还可以表示两种说法的正确程度，"与其说……不如说……"。

　　He is an artist rather than a philosopher.与其说他是哲学家，倒不如说是艺术家。

　　2. other than

　　意为"不同于，非，除……之外"。

　　The actor performed other than perfectly.演员的表演远非尽善尽美。

　　He never speaks to me other than to ask for something.他除了向我要东西之外，从来不和我说话。

　　3. more than

　　意为"极其，超出，超出……的"。

　　They were more than pleased to help.他们非常愿意帮忙。

　　Some of the stories were really more than could be believed.有些故事实在不能相信。

　　4. more...than

　　①意为"与其……倒不如说"。

　　Joan is more diligent than clever.与其说琼聪明，不如说她勤奋。

　　②意为"比……更……"。

　　Joan is more clever than John.琼比约翰更聪明。

　　5. no more than

　　至多，不超过，仅仅，只是，相当于only，后面接名词或数词，在句中起形容词作用。

　　He has no more than 50 dollars.他只有不超过五十美元。

　　The estimate of 20,000 tons was probably no more than another wild assumption of theirs.这个两万吨的估计数字，也许只是他们的又一个胡编乱造。

　　6. no more... than

　　同……一样不，意味着前后都否定。

　　Richard is no more courageous than Saul is. (=Richard is not courageous any more than Saul is.)理查德和索尔都不勇敢。

　　7. not more... than(= not... any more than)

　　不比……更……，否定前者，肯定后者。

　　The new edition is not more expensive than the old edition.新版本不比旧版本贵。

　　8. less... than

　　与其说……不如说……

　　Experience shows that success is due less to ability than to zeal.经验表明，成功与其说是由于能力，不如说是由于热情。

　　9. no less than

　　①多达

　　I have written no less than six papers this semester.这学期我写的论文不下六篇。

　　②简直是，恰好

　　It is no less than robbery to ask for so much.要这么多，简直跟抢劫没两样。

　　10. no less... than

　　与……一样，不比……差，强调同等性。

　　Sunlight is no less necessary than fresh air to a healthy body.日光和新鲜空气对身体健康是同样不可缺少的。

　　11. not less than

　　以上，至少……

　　He has not less than three sons.他至少有三个儿子。

　　12. no sooner... than

　　一……就……，用法相当于hardly/ scarcely... when。

　　I had no sooner left home than it began to rain.我刚离开家，天就开始下雨。

　　由此，本文开篇所举例题答案应为A。
