  Dear Jack,

Thank you for congratulations; my congratulations to you! I remember Margaret Field very well-the girl with that wonderful red hair and those beautiful green eyes. She was the most popular girl in the college. You're a very lucky fellow and I'm sure you'll be very happy with her.

Brenda and I are very lucky, too. Her father gave us this house as a wedding present, so we don't have to pay rent. The house and furniture are insured(保险) already, so I can't help you by giving you that kind of business. I wish I'd known earlier that you were in the insurance business. I'd certainly have asked you to give me a policy for the house and all its things.

I'm rather doubtful about the value of life insurance. It's my duty, I know, to see that there will be money for my wife, and later on for the children. But I feel that it's wiser to put some money I can save into the shares(股票) of good business companies. You say I can get a policy that provides 5,000 pounds when I'm 65. Yes, but that time is nearly forty years away, and what will 5,000 pounds be worth then? In fifty years from now it may be worth only two-thirds or even a half of what it is worth today. Now if I put my savings into the shares of the big oil companies, the value of the shares will go up with the rise in costs and prices.

  Yours sincerely,

  Fred

Foulsham House is a fine, stone house of the 1790s. It stands high above the River Byre, in twenty-five hectares (公顷) of the best farmland in the south-west.

Smithson built the house, and the story goes that George, the young Prince(王子) of Wales, fell in love with the beautiful lady Kitty Wake, at one of the first Lord Foulsham's wild parties. Many great men have ridden on the hills about Foulsham House, and many fine ladies have taken tea there.

Dieters also spend money on diet pills, exercise machines, and jogging suits (健美服) . Each year dozens of new diets are popularised. They have such names as the Miracle Diet, the Nine-day Wonder Diet, and the East 24-hour Diet. There is even one called the Ice Cream Diet, which advises dieters to eat only ice cream for lunch and dinner! For dieters who cannot lose weight on their own, there are many well-organized diet groups, which offer help and encouragement.
