Consulates(领事馆) exist to help citizens abroad to help themselves. Every year millions of people go abroad for pleasure or profit. There are consular officers ready to do what they can to help if people get into difficulties, but for all sorts of reasons there are limits to what they can do. Most times things go well for travellers abroad but occasionally things go wrong.

So, whether you are an experienced traveller or a first timer, going by yourself, with the family or a group there are things you should do before you go. Think about money and tickets well in advance. Take enough money including enough to pay your return fare, and hold on to it. Better still, buy return tickets in the first place. In an emergency a consul(领事) will contact relatives or friends and ask them to help you with money or tickets. But there's no law that says a consul has to lend you money and if he eventually does(and it will have to be repaid) he will want to be satisfied first that you really do have no money and there is no one else you know who can help.

It is also important to take out proper insurance for everything from car breakdowns to loss of life. A consul cannot pay your medical or any other bills, nor can he do the work of local travel representatives or motoring organisations.

21.What is the author trying to do in the text?

  A. To inform people about laws abroad.

  B. To describe an international problem.

  C. To explain how to visit a consulate.

  D. To give advice about consulates.

22.Why would somebody read the text?

  A. To know how to contact a consul.

  B. To find out how to make a complaint.

24.You can borrow money from a consul if you ____.

  A. need to stay abroad longer

  B. have to help a relative

  C. have no other financial(资金) means

  D. need to have your car repaired

25.Which of the following notices would you see in a Consular Office?

When I was in Scotland last year, I visited a special hydroelectric power station. It is inside a mountain. It rains a lot in the mountains of Scotland and there are huge lakes high up. The water falls down through large pipes to a generator(发电机) in the power station. The energy of the moving water turns the generator and this produces electricity. A big transformer then increases the number of volts to over 400,000. The electricity goes through cables(电缆) to different parts of Scotland, England and Wales.

The inside of the power station was very clean because it doesn't burn coal or gas. It was also very quiet.I was very surprised. It was just like being in a hospital, really.

I think hydroelectric power stations are much safer than nuclear power stations. They are also better for the earth than coal or gas power stations. Some countries like Sweden and the Netherlands have said they aren't going to build any more nuclear power stations. They are going to try to make"clean" electricity using water or wind. I think we should do the same and spend more money on building hydroelectric power stations.

26.What is the best title for this text?

  A. Future of electricity

  B. Dangers of nuclear power

  C. Electricity in Scotland

  D. Electricity from water

  27. We can infer from the text that the word "hydroelectric" means____.

  A. using the energy of the water to clean the air

  B. using water-power to produce electricity

  C. using pipes to carry water

  D. using wind-power to produce electricity

  28. Which of the following is something that changes the number of volts?

  A. Transformer. B. Generator. C. Cable.D. Pipe.

  29. What are the reasons that the power station is "like a hospital"?

  A. It looks like a hospital.

  B. It has beautiful mountain scenery.

  C. It is very clean and quiet.

  D. It doesn't burn coal or gas.

  30. What can a reader find out from the text?

  A. The future of electric power stations.

  B. The advantage of a hydroelectric power station.

  C. The number of electric power stations.

  D. The countries that have nuclear power stations.

  B) 阅读下列短文,然后回答问题或完成句子?

  (C)

Marco Polo was born in Italy,in the city of Venice, about 1254. At that time Europeans knew almost nothing of people and nations on other continents, except in the areas of Asia and Africa touching the Mediterranean(地中海).

In 1271 Marco Polo, his uncle, and his father set out on a journey to Cathay. For four years they travelled on foot and on camels, across the deserts and through the mountains of central Asia. Finally they arrived at Khanbalik, the city of Kublai Khan, the Mongol(蒙古) ruler of China.

In China Marco Polo found people with a culture very different from his own. He saw palaces grander than any in Europe, sculptures of great beauty... a new world full of many wonders. After leaving China, Marco Polo travelled to Japan, southeastern Asia, India, and eastern Africa as a representative of the Khan.

In 1292-two hundred years before Columbus-the great voyager set out for home. The stories of Cathay he brought back with him spread quickly throughout Eu-rope. Europe was never again the same.

  31. What is the main idea of this passage?

  32. How did Marco Polo travel to China?

  33. Which country did Marco Polo go first right after leaving China?

  34. Finally Marco Polo became____.

  35. When did Marco Polo begin his journey back home?

  (D)

About three hundred words in the English language come from the names of people. Many of these words are technical words. When there is a new invention or discovery, a new word may be coined after the inventor or scientist.

It is interesting to observe how many common words have found their way into the language from the names of people. Lord Sandwich who lived from 1718-1792 used to sit at the gambling(赌博) table eating slices of bread with meat in between. As the Lord was the only one among his friends who ate bread in that way, his friends began to call the bread "sandwich" for fun. Later on the word became part of the English language.

The word "boycott" means to refuse to have anything to do with somebody or something. It comes from a man called Captain Boycott. He was a land agent in 1880 and he collected rents and taxes for an English landowner in Ireland. But the Captain was a very tough man. He treated his poor tenants very badly. His tenants decided not to speak to him at all. Eventually word got back to the landowner and the Captain was removed. The word"boycott" became popular and was used by everyone to mean the kind of treatment that was received by Captain Boycott.

  36. Lord Sandwich was fond of____.

  37. Why did the tenants dislike the land agent?

  38. Where did the word "boycott" come from?

  39. The underlined word "coined" in the first paragraph means____.

  (E)

What are the riskiest sports you can do? Well, if you thought of "dangerous sports" like hang-gliding(悬挂式滑翔运动), parachuting(跳伞运动), or scuba-diving, you'd be wrong, because they're not, in fact, that dangerous.

According to recent statistics(统计资料), the sport that causes most injuries is rugby, and football is a close second. Despite the popularity of these games, and although we teach school children to play them, they injure more people per 1,000 than motor-racing, skiing, or scuba-diving.

Of course, people do get hurt in"adventure sports"and the most dangerous is climbing, which kills eight people a year. But it is not always obvious which activities are dangerous. For instance, two people die every year in hang-gliding accidents, but the same number are killed by badminton, whereas six people a year die in fishing accidents! So"exciting" isn't always the same as "dangerous".

This is even more true when you consider the activities of everyday life. Many more people die due to accidents in the home than from sports of any kind. Did you know that 160 people per year are killed by toothpaste and 3,600 are killed by curtains(although how this happens is a mystery)? And if you really want to live dangerously, then have a cigarette, or get in a car, because the three biggest killers in the UK are heart disease, cancer, and car accidents, in that order. So to live longer, stop smoking, sell the car, and start jumping out of aeroplanes!

  41. The purpose in writing this text is____.

  42. According to the article, judge whether the following statement is TRUE (T) or FALSE (F): The biggest killer in the UK is car accidents.

  43. List two of the riskiest sports you can do according to the passage.

  44. When the writer says "So'exciting'isn't always the same a'dangerous'",what does he mean?

  45. It can be inferred from the text that if you want to decrease risks in dangerous sports, you need to

  ____.

When someone sees a new food product for sale in

the supermarket, the decision whether or not to buy it

46 various factors. Among the most important of these, of course, are 47 and packaging. It is obvious that a highly-priced product will not sell well. If a consumer is 48 with two different brands of baked beans, one of which is 49 as expensive as the other, he will probably choose that 50 is cheaper. Nowadays, economic recession(不景气) has made people even more unwilling to buy 51 might be thought of as luxury(奢侈) items. Interestingly, however there is strong evidence to suggest that if the price of a product is too 52 , the effect on sales will be the same. It simply 53 whether the product is of top quality or not. The public will not buy something it considers to be too 54 . Inevitably(不可避免地), this comes as a surprise to most people, but market research has 55 it to be true. It goes without saying that the colour and the 56 of the packaging also 57 a very important role in the success or failure of a new product. 58 , people tend to choose brands of frozen vegetables in green or blue packets 59 those packaged in red or yellow. The implications(含意)of all this are obvious: it is essential that manufacturers and advertisers research the market carefully before they market a new 60 .

From the graph, we can see that there were two peaks in car accidents in 2001.One was in March with the number of accidents 35. The other was in August with the number of accidents 42, which was the highest point on the distribution line. From August, the number of car accidents decreased till it reached the lowest point of the year in December. The two peaks occurred in spring and summer, the two seasons which had most of the year's rain. Driving tends to be more dangerous on rainy days. Maybe the weather is the most important reason for car accidents. Be careful, when you drive a car on rainy days.
