Do you know that there is an area called the hippocampus(<脑内的>海马状突起) in our brains? It controls our moods, memories and levels of awareness. And scientists have just developed the first artificial chip(人造芯片) that acts the same way as this area.

Now, the next step is to decide whether or not the chip could one day be used to help people with brain damage. Researchers said that if all goes well, the chip may help people who have suffered brain damage due to stroke(中风), epilepsy(癫痫),etc.

It took US 10 years to develop the chip. First they built a mathematical model of how the hippocampus performs under all conditions. The next step is joining the chip into the brain in laboratory studies. The chip will first be tested on tissue(动物组织) from rat's brains. If it is successful, scientists plan to begin trails on live rats within six months and then on monkeys.

The researchers will stop part of the monkey's hippocampus from working and replace it with the programmed chip. If the invention works and is proved safe for humans, it would sit on the top of the skull(头骨), rather than inside the brain. This could reduce the damage to brain tissue. The chip will help someone with a damaged hippocampus regain the ability to store new memories.

  56. The chip is developed to ________ according to the passage.

  A. help people with diseases to reduce pain

It seems that close contact with an infected(被感染的) person, or contact with exhaled(呼出的) droplets and bodily secretions(分泌物), even after they have been deposited(附着) on subjects such as door handles, can spread the virus. So far SARS does not seem to spread in tiny air droplets as influenza(流感) or measles(麻疹) do, which would cause wide spread.

An outbreak of cases in a Hong Kong housing block led local health research to conclude that the disease might have been spread by droplets from polluted feces(排泄物) that were blown into other apartments through faulty sewage(排污) systems.

Because of the droplet spread, people in the Far East have begun wearing surgical face masks in public. But it is perhaps even more important to wash hands frequently with soap or an alcohol wash. Coronaviruses(冠状病毒) can spread when an infected person touches a surface, leaving a virus that can survive for several hours; it is then picked up by others, who infect themselves by touching their eyes, noses or mouths.

Hotspots such as Toronto and Singapore have tried to contain the infection by keeping people who have been in contact with SARS patients in quarantine(隔离) for 10 days. But not everybody has obeyed-police had to track down a number of families from the affected apartment complex in Hong Kong and move them to a temporary(临时的) quarantine camp, while Singapore uses electronic tags such as those used for prisoners.

The WHO has issued emergency guidelines for airlines and air travelers. People with SARS symptoms, or who have had close contact with someone diagnosed with the infection, should seek medical advice. Airlines are screening passengers from the worst-affected places, and border officials are testing people's temperature at entry points in affected areas.

  68. According to the passage, SARS virus can spread ________ .

  A. through close contact with a person who is badly ill

  B. through contact with exhaled droplets and bodily secretions

  C. in tiny air droplets as influenza or measles do

  D. by door handles and other apartments in a housing block

  69. Which of the following is NOT true?

  A. In order to prevent SARS, people had better wear surgical face masks.

  B. In order to prevent SARS, people had better keep away from hotspots.

  C. In order to prevent SARS, it's important for people to touch their eyes, noses and mouths.

  D. In order to prevent SARS, it's much better for people to wash hands frequently.

  70. The underlined words "track down" in paragraph 4 means ________ .

  A. 记录 B. 检查 C. 发现 D. 拍摄

  71. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?

  A. What can we do to fight against SARS?

  B. How can SARS spread?

  C. Where can SARS take place?

  D. Why are people afraid of SARS?

Athens will welcome the 2004 Olympic Games with open arms. Not only will the Games be returning to their birthplace, but they'll also be entering a new period of Olympic history.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has been looking for ways to make the world's largest sporting event a bit smaller and easier for cities to host. Mexico is the only Latin American nation to have hosted the Olympics. And the games have never been held in Africa.

It costs well over US$ 4 billion to host the Olympic Games. And this is stopping many poorer countries from trying to win the bid. Cities in Africa and Latin America, with great social and money problems, cannot even begin to make the bid.

So, the IOC has suggested 117 ways to make the Games smaller and easier for cities across the world. These ideas are to be put into practice soon-maybe in time for the Beijing 2008 Olympics. The IOC wants to save up to US$ 400 million.

The suggestions include limiting the number of sports to 28 and the number of athletes to 10,500.

"Imagine a bus with 28 seats and some sports need to get off to give their places to other sports,"said an IOC official. Sports that might not appear in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games include baseball, softball and the modern pentathlon(五项全能)(shooting, fencing, horse jumping, swimming and running).

"We think that the Olympic Games have to be made smaller, and less costly so that they can be organized by all continents and subcontinents," said IOC president Jacques Rogge. "Our dream is that a continent such as Africa will be able to organize the Olympic Games."

  72. The purpose of writing the article is ________ .

  A. to think highly of the Athens Olympic Games

  B. to make many poorer countries be able to organize the Olympics

  C. to increase the events of the Athens Olympic Games

  D. to make Athens enter a new period of Olympic history

  73. From the passage, we can know that the Olympics have been held in four continents EXCEPT ________ .

  A. Asia B. Africa C. Europe D. America

  74. The events which are most probably limited include ________ according to the passage.

  A. basketball, baseball and football

  B. baseball, softball and volleyball

  C. softball, baseball and the modern pentathlon

  D. softball, fencing and pentathlon

  75. The main idea of the passage is ________.

  A. that the Olympic Games have to be made smaller and less costly

  B. that the Olympic Games have to increase the number of sports

  C. that the Olympic Games have to increase the number of athletes

  D. that the Olympic Games have to enlarge their global appeal(吸引力)

  (Text 10)

Now that you want to know something about my life in the past, I can tell you my story. When I was a boy, things were different. I had to get up at six every morning. That was not very bad in summer, but in winter it was cold. And we didn't have any hot water in the house. We had to wash in cold water. We didn't have a bathroom. My dad had some chickens. I had to feed them every morning and then I had to walk to school with my little sister. It was two miles to school and two miles back in the evening. But it always seemed longer in the morning when we were going to school. There was a bus, but we didn't have the money. And we had to go to bed at seven o'clock every night. We couldn't watch TV because there wasn't any. On Sundays we had to go to church three times-morning, afternoon and evening. There weren't so many cars on the roads then, so the streets were safe to play in. And there were not many thieves and robbers in those days. And we had some good times. We could go out and our parents didn't have to worry about us. We had to work hard and we weren't able to buy all those things in the shops today. Life was hard, but it was simple and people were happier.

  第二节:One possible version:

  Income Sources of College Students

The income of the American and the Chinese students comes through almost the same channels: parents, part-time jobs and scholarships, but the percentage of each is quite different. Half the American students' income is from their parents, thirty-five percent from part-time jobs, and fifteen percent from scholarships. Chinese students, on the other hand, get ninety percent of their income from their parents.

In my opinion, there are two main reasons for this. One is that Chinese parents care so much for their children that it is almost unthinkable for students to live on their own. The other is that Chinese students have fewer chances to find part-time jobs.
