  Lost Generation in China

  Some articles are available in the network which state that the people born in the 1980s are generally referred to as the lost generation. These people were born at the initial period of China's reform and opening-up. They are living in a prosperous society of the market economy with many social problems like drugs, robbery, living-together and so on. People have different values concerning family and marriage. There seems to be an obvious generation gap between these people and their parents. Therefore some of them feel puzzled and have trouble adapting to the rapid changes in society.

  In addition, these people are faced with greater pressure than ever before. They find, to their disappointment, it is hard to find a job, let alone an ideal one. Some college students have even had to face unemployment when they graduate. They have come to know that there are so many difficulties to overcome. Some of them are not competitive and feel frustrated. Some people, especially those in the distressed areas, even think that knowledge is useless.

  In my opinion, the phenomena such as generation gap, and unemployment do exist in the present society. However, the generation born in the 1980s can never be called the lost generation. First of all, these people are trying their best to get knowledge so as to follow the rapid development of science and technology. Furthermore, most of them never feel discouraged or lose heart in face of difficulties. Instead, they are fully aware of challenge and opportunities, as well as their social responsibilities. The generation of the 1980s are bound to succeed and achieve much if they do not feel lost.

  One possible version:

  Mobile Phones on Campus

  Nowadays mobile phones on campus have become a common phenomenon. Most of the students in colleges and universities carry these products of modern invention. Some high school students are also equipped with these items. Mobile phones are so popular with the students that they think their life revolves around them. Students are often seen using their mobile phones in the dormitory, on the way to the library or even in the classroom. Many students regard a mobile phone as a vital communication tool and a fashion.

  However, possessing a mobile phone on campus does have its disadvantages. First of all, it may cost a lot. It is the students themselves or their parents who have to pay the fee necessary. Besides, the ringing of a mobile phone in the classroom or library will surely disturb others and hinder one's concentration too. It is even reported that a mobile phone can transmit radiation which does harm to human health.

  What attitudes shall we have towards mobile phones on campus? There is no doubt that we can never go to such a radical extreme as to ban the use of mobile phones on campus. Both teachers and students should be conscious of the expense and interference caused by a mobile phone and make good and rational use of it. What's more, a mobile phone should be helpful to students for study or communication purposes instead of harming them with vulgar messages or radiation.

  2. 人们穿着的服装显示出人们对生活的态度;

  One possible version:

  The Clothes We Wear

  Clothes, to a large extent, reflect people's social status. Judging by the types of clothes, we can classify them into different age groups. For instance, young men like to wear clothes fashionable and young girls prefer to wear low-cut dresses and miniskirts.

  The type of clothes we wear will also reveal certain attitudes towards life. Some people like to dress elegantly so as to show that they enjoy material comforts in life. Other people prefer to dress simply as they want to live a clean and simple life. Definitely, the type of clothes a person wears indicates his outlook on life.

  How can we select clothes that suit us? First of all, we should consider our own age and social status. Secondly, we should wear clothes appropriate to the occasions. Thirdly, we should never follow certain styles blindly. In a word, we must make it a point in life to wear clothes that make us feel and look our best.

  Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic"Working at Home". You should write no less than 120 words and base your composition on the outline given in Chinese below:

  1. 居家工作时代已经到来;

  2. 这种现象的利与弊;

  3. 你的个人看法。

  One possible version:

  Working at Home

  Only a few decades ago, the idea of working at home would have sounded quite strange to us. With social development, however, working at home has become so popular nowadays that some even say that we have entered the era of working at home.

  Like all newly emergent phenomena, working at home has brought about controversy concerning its advantages and disadvantages. Some argue that thanks to the advancement of communication technology, which makes working at home possible, human beings are provided with an alternative way of working that enables them to work at ease, arrange their schedules flexibly, and be freed from the waste of time in traveling to offices. However, there are also people who suggest that working at home deprives a person of the chance to communicating with others through work, isolates him from the outside world, and discourages the spirit of teamwork.

  In my opinion, whether working at home is a good choice or not depends on one's own personality. If a person enjoys working alone and performs his tasks best while working at home, he should not be denied such a choice.
