Introduction

What are short-term and long-term
learning goals? How can I plan short-term goals, and how can I help children
to meet them? This unit has some suggestions. |
1. What are long-term goals? |
·Long-term goals are general statements of what
children should learn in English over a long period of time, often a semester
or longer.
· You can find the long-term-goals for children in Years 3 and 4 in level
1 of the Basic Requirements for Primary School English.
·You can find the long-term-goals for children in Years 5 and 6 in level
2 of the Basic Requirements for Primary School English.
·An example for level 1 is "Children should be able to read and understand
words describing objects."
·Local or national governments usually decide long-term goals. |
2. What are short-term goals? |
·Short-term goals are more specific
statements of what children should learn in English.
·They cover a shorter period of time such as a lesson activity, a whole
lesson, a week, or a coursebook unit.
·An example is "By the end of this unit, children should be able to
read and understand the colours red, pink, yellow, blue, and green."
·Sometimes teachers in a school meet together to agree on the short-term
goals for children learning English.
·Sometimes you yourself need to plan short-term learning goals. |
3. How can I plan short-term goals? |
·Plan weekly, monthly, lesson
by lesson, or in any way that works well for you.
·Your first question in planning is always "What do I want children
to learn?" The answers to this question are your short-term goals.
·Now check to see whether the short-term goals contribute towards the long-term
goals.
·If yes, plan the goals of your activities and lessons. If not, choose new
learning goals and start planning.
·Remember to set goals that will give different children a chance to be
successful.
·For example, you may want some children to match ten sports to pictures
in a reading activity, but the goal for others may be to match only five
sports. |
4. How do I help children to achieve goals? |
·Tell children the goals of
activities, a lesson or coursebook unit, so that children know what they
have to do.
·You may need to support some children in activities, and challenge others
by extending the goal if they finish an activity quickly.
·Give feedback to children on what they did well, and tell them if they
need to do something better next time.
·Get feedback from children. Ask them to tell you in Chinese about activities,
skills, or lessons they find easy or difficult. |
一、Summary |
Short-term goals need to start
from what you want children to learn. Set different short-term goals for
different children and provide support and challenge to help them achieve
these goals. |
