　　A British science publication is reporting that a disease found in Asian birds probably began in China as early as last year. The New Scientist magazine reports that unidentified health experts said that Chinese officials try to hide the disease. The experts said that the Asian Bird Flu disease in China may have been the result of a campaign to prevent the disease in the birds. That effort reportedly began in 1997 after a bird disease spread in Hong Kong. The report said an inactive virus in the medicine given to birds at that time may have caused the birds to carry the sickness without showing signs of infection. It said the virus then may have spread through the illegal chicken trade among other Asian nations. China has not commented on the report.
