Unit 15 A doctor for animals

  三个行之有效的阅读技巧

  1.瞻前顾后。

  对一具体问题不要局限于一词一事,而应从短文整体考虑,从主线向外扩展,打开思路,前后上下对照。这样,可减少“钻牛角尖”和“繁琐分析”。而且,即使是事实和细节题,也是围绕或用以说明主旨和大意的。

  2.首尾突破。

  大多数短文,尤其是新闻报道或议论文的第一段,或每段的第一句,常包含了全文的主要信息或基本观点;而结尾部分常是结局或结论。寓言或幽默文字的结尾也往往是点睛之笔或值得玩味之处。因此,抓住首尾往往就抓住了主要矛盾。

  3.先易后难。

  即先做浅层易答之题,再做深层复杂或尚存疑惑之题,各个击破。这样,既可减轻心理压力,而且有了已完成的易题的内容作铺垫,有时还会从中得到意想不到的启示。

  Passage 1

  一、阅读理解

  A farmer had a cow.He took very good care of this cow and one day when it was ill, he was worried.He telephoned the vet.

  “What's the problem?”the vet asked him when he arrived.

  “My cows ill.”the farmer said,“I don't know what's the matter with her.She's lying down and wont stand up.She won't eat, and she's making a strange noise.”①

  The vet looked at the cow.“Shes certainly ill,”he said, “and she needs to take some very strong medicine.”② He took a bottle out of his box and put two pills into his hand.

  “Give her these,”he said,“The pills should make her better.”

  “How should I give them to her?”the farmer asked.

  The vet gave him a long tube (管子).“Put this tube in her mouth,”he said, “then put the pills in the tube and blow.Thatll make it.”Then the vet went away.

  The next day he came to the farm again.The farmer was sitting outside his house and looked more worried.

  “How's your cow?”the vet asked.

  “No change,”the farmer said, “and I'm feeling very strange myself.”

  “Oh?”the vet said, “Why?”

  “l did what you said,”The farmer answered.“I put the tube in the cow's mouth and then put two pills down it.”

  Many people like animals and keep one or more as pets (宠物)—dogs, cats, or some kinds of birds.If you keep a dog or a cat as a pet, you must know how to look after them.

  A grownup (成年的) dog needs two meals a day—not more.And it can eat meat, fish, rice and some other things.Dogs like large bones, but don't give them chicken bones.Remember to give them much clean water.

  A dog should have a clean, dry box for sleeping.① Washing it once a week is good for its health.If it is ill, take it to a doctor.A healthy dog will bring you more pleasure.

  Be careful when you have chosen a cat.It has two meals a day with some meat or fish.② Cats drink a little milk every day.Sometimes give them vegetables to eat.Dont forget that they need clean water to drink.

  Take good care of your pets.They will be your good friends.Maybe they can give you some help when you need.

  One afternoon all the students went to have supper and he bought a piece of bread.He was reading a book under a big tree, while a dog was standing near him.At that moment the headmaster came out and saw it.He became angry and said, “Dont you know we dont let anybody rear (饲养) dogs in the school?”②

  Passage 1

  本文主要记叙了一位农民的奶牛生病了,兽医给了他两个药力很强的药丸,让他用一根管子将药丸吹进奶牛的嘴里,没料到奶牛先把药丸吹进了农民的嘴里。

  1.B。本文开头讲了农民的奶牛生病,所以他请了vet给奶牛看病,通过阅读分析,我们应该猜出vet是 “兽医”的意思。

  1.T。根据短文的第一句可知。

  2.F。根据第二段第一句可知:一只成年的狗一天需要两顿饭,不能再多了。

  3.F。根据文中第二段第三句“Dogs like large bones, but dont give them chicken bones.” 可知。

  4.T。根据文中第二段第二句可知。

  1.Three。根据“两年半前他来到这所学校。”可知Robert现在上三年级。

  2.kind/friendly。根据原文中“He studies hard and gets on well with his classmates.”可知Robert与同学们关系融洽,即同学们对他很友好。be kind/friendly to sb.表示“对某人和蔼/友好”。

  3.learn/study。根据“And he often helps his friends with their lessons.”(他经常帮助他的朋友学习功课。)即help sb.with sth.=help sb.(to) do sth.。

  4.born。come from 意为“出生于”时,相当于be born。

  5.rich。根据原文中“…the headmaster who was born in a rich family…”可知。

  6.what。do what he can=do ones best表示“竭尽所能”。

  7.afternoon。根据第二段第一句可知。

  8.for。

  9.When。根据“At that moment the headmaster came out and saw it.” 可知。

  10.punish。根据第一段中的“…does his best to make excuse to punish him.”可知:校长想指责的是Robert的狗在校园内,从而欲惩罚Robert。

  Passage 4

  本文作者记叙了“非典”时期,学校放假,自己在家学习的苦闷以及对老师同学的思念之情,反映了小作者渴望疫情尽快结束、重返校园的迫切之情。

  1.D。在具体日期前要用介词on。

  2.A。从下文可知,憋在家里并不好。

  3.B。work out意为“算出;做出”;go out意为“出去”;take out意为“取出;拿出”;find out意为“找到;发现”。从上文的“stay at home”可确定选B。

  4.A。由“Although our classes are sometimes boring…”可知作者的观点是“上学要比呆在家里好得多”。

  读书使人充实,交谈使人精明。By reading we enrich the mind, by conversation we polish it.

  一叶障目,不见泰山。Cannot see the wood for the trees.

  5.C。由上文的呆在家里以及下文的“It would be nice just to see their faces again.”可知“我”思念老师。

  6.B。as if后接从句。从上文可知这里说的是“我”的情况,故选B。

  1.Washing it once a week is good for its health.一周给它洗一次澡对它的健康有益。(Line 7,Passage 2)

  ①once a week, twice a day 等是表示动作频率的短语,对这类短语划线提问时用how often (多久一次)。另外,how often还可以对sometimes, usually, always等频度副词,every other day(每隔一天),every four years等表示动作频率的短语进行提问。例如:

  He goes to help Grandpa Li twice a week.(对划线部分提问)

  How often does he go to help Grandpa Li?

  ②be good for 表示“对……有益”,be bad for 表示“对……有害”。例如:

  Reading in bed is bad for your eyes.躺在床上读书对你的眼睛有害。

  2.Sometimes give them vegetables to eat.有时给他们吃蔬菜。(Line 10,Passage 2)

  此句中的动词不定式to eat 作定语修饰前面的名词vegetables。动词不定式作定语时常置于被修饰词之后。例如:

  I have quite a lot of work to do.我有相当多的家庭作业要做。

  Would you like something to drink?你愿意要些喝的东西吗?

  3.We were told to leave school and stay at home because of a new deadly disease called SARS.由于一种名叫SARS的致命疾病,我们被告知离开学校呆在家中。(Line 1,Passage 4)

  because of 和because 都有“因为”、“由于”的意思,但because of 后跟名词(词组),because 后跟句子。例如:

  Because of the heavy rain, we got there late.由于大雨,我们到那儿迟到了。

  Because he didnt work hard, he couldnt pass the exam.由于他不努力学习,所以他考试不及格。
