  Passage 1

Now satellites are helping to forecast (预报) the weather. They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere (大气), because this is where the weather forms (形成).They send these pictures to the weather station. So the scientists there can see the weather of any part of the world and tell how the weather will change.

Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries can receive satellite pictures. When they receive the new pictures, they compare (比较) them with the earlier ones.Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed during the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too.In their next weather forecast, they can tell people about it.

So the weather satellites are of a great help to the scientists at the station. In the past they could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours earlier. Now they can make good forecasts for 3 or 5 days.Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead.

①The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere, because this is where the weather forms.

②So the weather satellites are of a great help to the scientists at the station.

③Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead.

  Passage 2

Astronomy (天文学) is the oldest science known to man.Thousands of years ago man looked at the stars and wondered about the heavens. But man was limited (限制) by six planets that he could see with his eyes alone.

The Greeks (希腊人) studied astronomy over 2,000 years ago. They could see the size, color, and brightness of a star. They could see its place in the sky. They watched the stars move as the seasons changed. But the Greeks had no tools to help themselves study the heavens.

Each new tool added to the field of astronomy helped man reach out into space. Until there were telescopes (望远镜), man knew a little about the moon.He did not know that the planet called Saturn (土星) had rings around it.His sight was so limited that he could not see all the planets. In the early 1700s, people thought there were only six planets.Pluto (冥王星), the last of nine planets to be discovered, was not seen until 1930.

Before the spectroscope (分光镜), man did not know what kind of gases was in the sun or other stars.Without the radiotelescope (射电望远镜), we did not know that radio noises came from far in space.

Today, astronomy is a growing science. We have learned more in the last fifty years than in the whole history of astronomy.

①But man was limited by six planets that he could see with his eyes alone.

②Each new tool added to the field of astronomy helped man reach out into space.

③Pluto, the last of nine planets to be discovered, was not seen until 1930.

1.It was believed that there were about fifty planets in space in the early 1700s.

2.When the Greeks watched the stars, they knew what the stars were made of.

3.Thousands of years ago, man watched the stars with their eyes.

  4.People didn't know about Pluto until 1930.

5.In the last fifty years, people began to do research on astronomy.

  Passage 1

1.B。从文中“The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere, because this is where the weather forms.”

3.B。从文中“In the past they could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours earlier.”

Custom is a second nature.

Custom makes all things easy.

4.D。文章的第一句“Now satellites are helping to forecast the weather.”

  3.C。“9∶00a.m.—4∶00 p.m.except Friday10∶00 a.m.—3∶00 p.m.”

6.D。从“Do not touch, give food or go near to the animals.”

  Passage 4

  1.more。

1.They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world. (Line 1,Passage 1)

We can reach/get/arrive there on time.

The Blacks got to (=arrived in) China yesterday.

2.Without the radiotelescope, we didn't know that radio noises came from far in space. (Line 15,Passage 2)
