　　Empress Michiko, in a statement on her 70th birthday in October, made veiled criticism of her daughter-in-law as she threw her support behind the royal minders.

　　"It must be the Crown Princess herself who is feeling the most pain in her extended period of rest," Michiko said. "The Imperial Household Agency has many issues that require continued efforts for improvement, but I believe it is not a place that should be censured as it is now," the empress said at the time.
