would rather表示选择或主观上的愿望，其中的would亦可为had。它表示“宁愿，宁可”的意思。如果要把取舍的双方都说出来，则应该用would(had) rather... than...，表示“宁愿……也不……”。例如：

　　My aunt invited me to the movies，but I said I would rather go on a picnic with the girls. 我姑妈邀请我去看电影，可是我说我倒愿意跟女孩们一起去野餐。

　　I would rather have the small one than the big one. 我宁愿要小的，不要大的。

　　He would rather go today than tomorrow. 他宁愿今天去，而不愿明天去。

　　I would rather stay at home than go out. 我宁可呆在家里也不想出去。

　　注意：比较的部分如果是动词，than后则应是动词原形。

　　rather than是连词，不表示主观愿望，而表示一个事实，即“(做)……而不……”， “与其说是……不如说是……”，有时可用短语介词instead of替代。 注意than后的动词要与主句中与之相当的动词在形式上一致。例如：

　　John ought to go rather than(=instead of) Jean. 应该去的是约翰，而不是吉恩。

　　He ran all the way rather than walked. 他一路跑而不是走。

　　rather than可以用在句首。例如：

　　Rather than allow the vegetables to go bad，he sold them at half price. 不愿让菜烂掉，他以半价卖掉了。
