子曰：“吾十有五而志于学，三十而立，四十而不惑，五十而知天命，六十而耳顺，七十而从心所欲，不逾矩。”人类从出生、成长、衰老到死亡，经历不同的阶段。于是，汉语中有许多跟年龄有关的成语、俗语或谚语。然而，英语也不例外。有趣的是，在英语中人们往往回避直接谈论“老年”(old age)这一阶段。所以，英语中描写老年人的习语就多于年轻人。笔者列举一些与年龄有关的英语习语，以飨读者。

　　Babies and Toddlers

　　a bundle of joy—newborn babies 新生儿。例如：

　　“Congratulations on your little bundle of joy.”“祝贺你喜得贵子！”

　　new little one—a child that has recently been born 婴儿。例如：

　　They have a new little one in their home. 他们家有一个刚出生不久的小孩。

　　a babe in arms—very young baby not able to walk or crawl襁褓中的婴儿。例如：

　　I was just a babe in arms when we move to the United States. 当我们搬到美国时，我还是一个襁褓中的婴儿。

　　Adult(成年人)往往被划分为青年人(20—30岁)；中年人(30—50岁)；老年人(50岁以上)。下面列举与各年龄段有关的英语习语。

　　Young Adult

　　20-something—somewhere between the ages of 20 and 29约20—29岁之间。例如：

　　This music appeals to the 20-something crowd. 这种音乐对二十多岁的人群很有吸引力。

　　30-something—somewhere between the ages of 30 and 39 约30—39岁之间。例如：

　　Many of my 30-something friends are settling down to have families. 我的很多30多岁的朋友都成了家，安顿下来。

　　Middle-aged Adults

　　midlife crisis—people who are middle aged are said to experience anxiety and uncertainty about one's identity, values, and relationships 中年危机是指中年人对社会地位、人生价值、社会关系充满了焦虑和不确定性。例如：

　　He seemed to be having a midlife crisis when he left his family and hitchhiked around the country. 他似乎正在经历中年危机。他离家出走，沿途搭便车前往全国各地。

　　over the hill—It alludes to the top of the hill as age 40 or midlife, and implies that from there life goes downhill or deteriorates 意思是说40岁是人生巅峰，此后开始走下坡路。例如：

　　Of course I can play volleyball with you. I'm not over the hill yet. 我当然可以和你玩排球。我还没老呢！

　　Seniors

　　年迈必然导致死亡。“老之将至”，在某种意义上象征着大限降临。所以英、美人大多怕死，忌老。“old”一词一般是令人难以接受的，这便是老年委婉语产生的原由。例如，senior 是senior citizen 的简称。它使用于二十世纪中期，尤指六十五岁以上的退休者。mature adult 也是指老年人。下面的习语用比喻的手法委婉地表述了人生的最后阶段，但内涵各不相同。

　　declining years—a period of declining health 健康状况每况愈下。例如：

　　He enjoyed writing his memoirs in his declining years.

　　在年老体弱的岁月里，他专注于写回忆录。

　　golden years—used to imply richness, happiness, and security in the later years of life“金色年华”指富有、愉快、有安全感的晚年生活。例如：

　　He spent his golden years traveling to many parts of the world.

　　他通过周游世界度过了晚年的幸福时光。

　　twilight years—the very last years of one's life; implies a period of less activity and worsening health人生的最后阶段，暗含老年人活动少，健康状况恶化。例如：

　　I want my parents to be comfortable in their twilight years.

　　我想让我的父母亲舒舒服服地度过暮年时光。

　　autumn of one's life—a period of maturity and gradual decline, but a happy and active period指人成熟和逐渐衰老的阶段，但这是一个积极、愉快的阶段。例如：

　　He said, “I hope to spend the autumn of my life with children and grandchildren nearby.”

　　他说：“我希望儿孙们在身边伴我度过晚年的幸福时光。”

　　要学好英语，需学会一些英语习语。习语言简意赅，涵义丰富，形象生动，反映英语文化民俗，运用得当，能大大提高英文水准及表达能力，认真学习，定会受益匪浅。
