为表示“acting or speaking officially for another person or people”这样一个基本意思，在现代英语中常见的表达法有：

　　一、译为下列惯用短语之一：

　　1. on(或in) behalf of

　　2. on somebody's behalf

　　3. in the person of

　　就使用率而言，on behalf of或on somebody's behalf为本组之最。in behalf of主要用在美国英语(见《综合英语成语词典》，69页)而in the person of多用在较为正式的场合或书面语中。实例：

　　1. 校长不在，所以我代表他领了奖。

　　The principal was not present, so I accepted the prize on his behalf.

　　注：视意境之不同，on one's behalf还可表示“某某人在场”这样一层意思。试看：Don't be uneasy on my behalf. (不要因为我在场而不安。)

　　2. 我代表我的同事们向你们表示感谢。

　　On behalf of my colleagues, I thank you.

　　3. 在记者招待会上，他代表新华社讲了话。

　　He spoke in the person of Xinhua-News Agency at the press conference.

　　二、译为短语动词stand for或act for

　　这一对短语动词虽然都能同“代表”形成等值对应关系，但在具体用法上却有不容忽视的差异：stand for代表的对象多是物(thing)，而act for代表的对象却多是人(person)或与人有关的名词(见例句3)。实例：

　　1. 我们的国旗代表我们的国家。

　　Our flag stands for our country.

　　2. 他代表该委员会。

　　He is acting for the committee.

　　3. 部长生病了，副部长将代表他出席这次重要的记者招待会。

　　The Minister is ill, so the Vice Minister will act for him at this important Press Conference.

　　三、译为表示同一语义的动词represent

　　《英英词典》对动词represent的注释是：(1)to act officially for another person or people; (2)stand for或mean。可见，翻译与“代表”有关的汉语句子时，represent理应是首选的全方位等值对应词。实例：

　　1. 他说，他做那件事不是为了自己而是为了他所代表的学校。

　　He said that he was doing that not for himself but for the school he represented.

　　2. 英国大使代表女王参加了葬礼。

　　The Queen was represented by the British ambassador.

　　3. 地图上的红线代表新建成的铁路线。

　　The red lines on the map represent(=stand for) newly-built railroads.

　　四、译为短语动词stand in for或speak for

　　stand in for sb.的本源意思是“暂时顶替某人”，引申后可解作“代表某人”；speak for受主导动词的影响只能表示“代表某人发言或讲话”一类意思。实例：

　　1. 我代表学习小组的全体成员在这里发言。

　　Here I am speaking for all the members of our study group.

　　2. 经理休假时，谁代表他主持工作？

　　Who is standing in for the manager while he is on vocation?

　　五、其他灵活译法

　　“No context, no meaning.”这是一句判断词义的至理名言。从汉译英的角度看，下列实例中的英语表达法似乎更值得我们学习和模仿。实例：

　　1. 我不在时，我弟弟代表我。

　　My younger brother is my deputy during my absence.

　　2. 在算术中，“加”号代表增加。

　　The sign “+” symbolizes addition in arithmetic.
