[歌词讲解]

　　1.第一句，How the hell did we wind up like this 我们怎么会变成这样？这里的wind，w-i-n-d的发音不是wind(风)，而是wind (ai)，意思是“使某物沿弧形的、弯曲的或者旋转的路线前进，比如说，The river winds down to the sea. 这条河蜿蜒流入大海。She wound her way through the crowds. 她绕来绕去穿过了人群。歌词中的词组wind up表示“终于到达某处，安顿下来；最终…”，比如说，We eventually wound up staying in a super little hotel by the sea. 最后我们在一个很好的海滨小旅馆落下脚。I always said he would wind up in jail. 我常说到头来他非进监狱不可。

　　2. 歌词当中的 turn the tables 有“劣势转为优势，扭转形势，转败为胜”的意思。

　　3. 这里unclench和unpack 都是动词加了否定前缀-un形成的。clench 这个词表示“紧闭某物，将某物压在一起”，我们可以说clench one's fists 攥紧拳头；clench one's jaws咬紧牙关 和clench one's teeth，咬牙。

　　4. too much of something，某事或者某物太多，太过火了，简直让人无法忍受，有一种贬义的感情色彩在里面。比如说，I've had too much of your babbling. 我受够了你的唠叨了。

　　5. as long as 表示“只要；如果”，比如说，As long as it doesn't rain we can play. 只要不下雨，我们就能玩。

　　6. when这里是一个疑问副词，表示“什么时候，何时”，比如说，Since when has he been missing? 他是从什么时候失踪的？

We could end up saying Things we've always needed to say 当中的end up 跟第一段歌词当中的wind up是一样的，表示“到达或来到某处，达到某种状态或者采取某种行动”，我们来用end up举几个例子，If you continue to steal you'll end up in prison. 如果你继续偷窃，早晚会进监狱的。At first he refused to take any responsibility but he ended up apologizing. 最初他根本不承认有任何责任，到头来还是道歉了。If he goes on driving like that, he'll end up dead. 他要是继续这样开车，早晚得死于非命。

　　9. play out 这个词组表示“在现实生活中演出或现出某事物，比如说，Their love affair was played out against the background of a country at war.他们恋爱的那个时候国家正在打仗。

　　10. paperback novel，平装小说，简装小说，比如说，When is the novel coming out in paperback? 那部小说的平装本什么时候出版？那么精装书怎么说呢？就是hardback books。
