Put your English to the test with some crime-solving! The Case of the Dead Dancer You’re a special agent at the San Francisco Police Department. One evening you get a phone call about a new case to investigate. You arrive at the San Francisco Bay shore, where the body of a woman was found in the sand underneath Golden Gate bridge. You deduce that she was taken by surprise and strangled from behind. After you take off her sunglasses and scarf, you see that she was a very attractive dark-haired girl. In her purse you find four one-dollar bills, a silver Nokia mobile phone and a driver’s license made out to Suzy Chin, age 22. Later you learn that she was a chorus girl in an San Francisco nightclub in North Beach. The evening newspaper carries the story, and shows a picture of Suzy in a silver costume. SFPD has found that Carlton Wang, a local playboy, was seen boating on the ocean nearby the afternoon of the murder. You question Carlton Wang. “I’d figured you’d be after me,” Wang says, with a smile. “I knew I’d been seen on the Bay while taking my new offshore speedboat for a cruise. The girl popped into my mind as soon as I saw the picture in the paper—I recognized her at once—the same girl I saw walking along the beach with her boyfriend—or friend. He was a thin man in a dark blue suit. They seemed to be arguing about something, because I saw him grab her shoulders and shake her hard!” “How far away were you?” you ask. Tommy thinks for a moment. “Oh, I’d say at least 250 meters or so. I didn’t hang around watching—I mind my own business. It wasn’t till I saw the papers that I knew what had happened! Such a pretty girl, too.” He shakes his head mournfully. “Did you ever meet or see Suzy Chin before?” you ask. “No,” Wang says. “I don’t think you’re telling the truth!” you say. “I’m holding you on suspicion of murder.” Why do you suspect Carlton? Answer: The Case of the Dead Dancer Carlton Wang said he had never met or seen Suzy Chin before. Nevertheless, he recognized her picture in the paper as the girl he had supposedly seen from his speedboat 250 meters away—and wearing sunglasses and a scarf! |
