At this point I had two major headaches.

　　Headache number 1: I am unexpectedly dead.

　　Headache number 2: I have accidentally infiltrated an angel school.

　　There was also a potential third headache which I refused to think about. The idea of me being an actual angel was just a joke!

　　Relax, Mel, I told myself. They mixed you up with one of the real angels on the way over. You'd better tell somebody.

　　But what will I say? I panicked. I couldn't exactly waltz up to someone and say, "Erm - anyone reported a missin9 an9el?" I mean, suppose I'd broken some really heavy cosmic law just by being here?

　　I was in such a state, I completely didn't notice Michael's pep-talk finishing. A woman in purple had started calling out names from a sheet. The hall emptied around me, as kids jumped out of their seats and went to join their teachers.

　　"Reuben Bird," said the woman. The skinny boy beside me sprang off the bench and ran down to the front. "Lola Sanchez."

　　"That's me!" cried Lola. A ripple of laughter went through the hall, but Lola didn't seem a bit embarrassed. She went to stand beside Reuben, beaming.

　　"Flora Devere, Ferdy Devere. Amber Overwood."

　　Amber bounded to the front, red-gold plaits whipping madly around her head. The twins sauntered out, like glamorous angel supermodels.

　　I could feel my palms getting sweaty. Don't say she called my name when I wasn't listening, I prayed.

　　Hold on, Melanie, I thought suddenly. You're carrying on as if you CHOSE to come here!

　　I blinked with surprise. So I was. Why was that? It's not like I ever saw the point of normal school. Why in the world would I want to go to some goody-goody Angel Academy? Not to mention that I'm not an angel, I reminded myself.

　　Then something eerie happened.

　　The woman with the list looked up and smiled at me as if she'd known I was there all along. "And finally, Melanie Beeby. Welcome to the Academy, Melanie. We all hope you have a happy and productive time here," she said.

　　My knees went to jelly. They'd got my name on their heavenly list!

　　They actually believed l was an angel! You'd think real angels would recognise an undercover human when they saw one. But she seemed totally taken in. When I didn't move from my seat, she gave me another encouraging smile, presumably thinking I had stage fright.

　　美兰妮，居然变成了个正儿八经的天使？

　　要是我的死党们知道了，一定会笑破肚子的。

　　我对自己说：

　　放松点，小美，那些天堂的人，一定是把你和一个真的天使弄混了。你最好把这个情况报告一下。

　　可我该怎么对别人说呢，难道说：

　　“你们这里有没有一个天使走丢了啊？”

　　就算我真的被吓傻了，也知道不能这么讲。

　　想想看，让人知道我不是天使却呆在这儿，那要是触犯了什么宇宙级的重大法律怎么办？

　　类似这样或那样的问题，把我的脑袋塞得满满的，弄得我压根没有注意到，迈克尔加油打气的致词已经完了。

　　一个穿紫色衣服的女士，开始照着名单点名了。

　　听到自己的名字，学生们一个一个地从座位上蹦起来，站到自己老师的身边。

　　“卢本——”那位女士叫道。

　　坐在我旁边的那个瘦瘦的男孩，从凳子上一跃而起，一路小跑到了前面。

　　“罗拉•桑切斯。”

　　“点到我啦！”罗拉大声叫了起来。

　　大厅里一片哄笑声，但是罗拉好像一点也不难为情。她眉开眼笑地走过去，站在卢本的旁边。

　　“弗萝拉，弗尔迪， 阿贝。”

　　阿贝蹦蹦跳跳地跑到前面，金红色的小辫子在她脑袋上乱甩。

　　弗萝拉和弗尔迪是对双胞胎，他们慢悠悠地踱着猫步，活像两个迷人的超级天使模特。

　　我的四周变空了，座位上已经没有人了，除了我之外。

　　我的手心全都是汗，应该不会点到我吧！

　　可是，担心的事情还是发生了。

　　拿名单的那个女士抬起头，对着我直笑，好像她一直都知道我坐在那里：

　　“最后一个，美兰妮•比比。欢迎到天使学校来，美兰妮。我们都祝你在这里过得愉

　　快，学得充实。”

　　我的腿开始发抖。

　　没搞错吧！天堂的花名册上居然有我的名字！

　　他们真的相信我是一个天使了！

　　怎么会这样啊？真正的天使只要动动脚趾头，就应该可以想出谁是冒牌天使的，可是她怎么就看不出来呢？

　　也许是看我坐在座位上没动，她又给了我一个鼓励的微笑，大概以为我害羞了。

　　好吧，抓住这个机会，赶快向她坦白吧，告诉她，我只是一个贪玩的女孩子，不小心跑到了天使中间。
