　　Apple除了一般我们都知道的意思，例如：“An apple a day keeps the doctor away .”(一日一苹果，医生远离我。)还有别的有趣的含义。它在俗语中有“家伙，同伴”的意思，通常会在apple前加一个形容词组成新词，如：smooth apple指自认为温柔或迷人的家伙，wise apple指粗鲁无礼的年轻人。

　　下面介绍一些关于apple的相关习语。

　　1、the apple of sb’s eye

　　亦作the apple of the eye，意为“为人钟爱的人或物(a person who is most dear to the person specified)”。本习语源出于《圣经(Psalms，17，8)》：“Keep me as the apple of the eye，hide me under the shadow of thy wings”。常用来喻指“掌上明珠”。

　　[例句]His daughter is the apple of his eye. 他将女儿视为掌上明珠。

　　2、Adam’s apple

　　源自《圣经•旧约•创世纪》。据载，人类始祖亚当在伊甸园里偷吃禁果时，一不小心将一块果肉卡在喉咙里，却又不上不下，留下一个疙瘩。这个故事随《圣经》广泛流传，后来就用Adam’s apple表示“(男人的)喉结”。

　　[例句]I find that your Adam’s apple isn’t apparent.我发现你的喉结不明显。

　　3、apple of discord

　　源于希腊神话中的“金苹果”故事。三女神因争夺作为最美丽象征的金苹果而导致特洛伊战争。由此，人们就用apple of discord来喻指“祸根；争端(cause of contention)”。

　　[例句]The use of the car was an apple of discord between Joe and his wife. 该由谁来用这辆车，是乔和妻子争吵的原因。

　　4、apple of love

　　源自南美洲首批开拓者用语。蕃茄原产于南美洲，16世纪前，首批来到南美的欧洲殖民者，不知其为何物，没人敢吃，到了后来，由于这种果实外表光亮鲜艳，人们便把它们作为观赏植物加以栽培，并把它们看作是爱情之果(apple of love)。因此，apple of love实际上指的是蕃茄(tomato)。

　　[例句]Hey, don’t touch that bike, it’s my apple of love. 嗨，别动那辆自行车，那可是我的爱情信物。

　　5、apple of Sodom

　　源自《圣约•旧约•创世纪》。据载，所多玛(Sodom)是古代死海(Dead Sea)附近的城市。由于那里的居民罪孽深重，上帝降天火焚毁所多玛后，在焦土上长出了苹果树，结出的果子外观诱人，但一摘就冒烟成灰。所以，apple of Sodom就被用来喻指“华而不实之物；徒有虚表的东西”。

　　[例句]The sofa he bought yesterday was found to be an apple of Sodom.结果发现他昨天买来的沙发是徒有其表的废物。

　　6、apple-pie order

　　据说，apple-pie 是希腊字母表中的第一个和第二处字母的连用。意思是排列的像字母表上的顺序一样整齐。 也许apple-pie order就转喻为“秩序井然；井井有条”。

　　[例句]Before her guests arrived, the hostess had put her house in apple?鄄pie order. 女主人在客人到达之前，就已将屋子收拾得井井有条了。

　　7、apple-polisher

　　过去，小学生常将擦得鲜艳夺目的苹果在老师上课前放在讲桌上，以博得老师的欢心。因此apple-polisher喻指“阿谀逢迎者；马屁精”。

　　[例句]John is such an apple-polisher —he always agrees with whatever the boss says.约翰是个马屁精,不管老板说什么,他都赞同。

　　8、upset the apple-cart

　　亦作upset sb’s apple cart，意为“打乱秩序；把事情搞糟；拆人台”。

　　[例句]Tom really upset the apple cart by telling Mary the truth about Jane.汤姆把珍妮的真实情况告诉了玛丽，他可真把事情给搞砸了。
