  我是这样学英语的

  Learn While You Play

I never really like to call myself a "good English speaker" when others say so. I almost feel ashamed, for I'm barely worthwhile for the world "good". When it comes to study English, I believe that you can only learn while you play. Let's look at the word "exaggerate". If you just read it 10 times hoping to memorize it, I guarantee it wouldn't be as effective as it is if you use it in a sentence, like "oh you are just exaggerating. "What I'm saying here is that whenever you see a new word, try to put it in a sentence and you'll find it's all goanna turn out easier.

Or how about me telling you guys about how I studied English. Up till senior two I was just one of those students who did ok in written English yet was horrible in spoken English. I have my best friend Yolly, who's in England now, to thank to. She was the one who told me, Belinda, you need to open up your mouth and T A L K! I spent the whole summer with her talking in English and went from "ummm...yeah...hmmm... uh huh" to fluent English. Then I went to a foreign language school with foreign teachers, and through my study there, I got to know all the foreign teachers there and became friends with them. And then those teachers introduced me to some other foreign teachers, and the other foreign teachers introduced me to other teachers... it was like I suddenly had a lot of foreign friends that I am not afraid to talk to. By doing all that have helped me to learn and practice my English and I have to admit, although I don’t really know about grammar and all that, I still got the "sense of language"(not bragging..:) ) to make it right.

So there you have it, my personal experience to learn English. But the most important thing you guys should remember after reading my experience is that you need to find a way that really helps you to learn and use English with your own method. You are the only one that can think and help for yourself. Trust yourself; believe in yourself that you can do it. Just like the time when I was on the stage in the Fujian Final of “CCTV Star of Outlook English Talent competition”, I couldn’t even feel my toes, but I kept telling myself to hang in there and guess what happened... I made it! I was the champion! Trust yourself, and YOU WILL MAKE IT!

Good Luck to you, to me, to everyone!

How does her dream come true?

How does my student, Zhang Siwen, realize her dream?

She sets high aims for herself. She believes that she could speak English as well as American TV and radio actors; she would speak English better than most of Americans. She has a great dream that some day she would go to the stage of the “CCTV Star of Outlook English Talent Competition”. She sets out to work with the dream, which becomes her spiritual support and has been inspiring her to work obsessively. Because her goal is much higher than ordinary English learners’, she is far ahead of them. Great dreams make great man. People are what they think they are. Now she is on the way to making her dream come true.

She is always making all efforts to turn her dream into reality. She would spend continuous hours listening to English news broadcast or tapes until her ears hurt acutely. She downloads English original movies from the Internet and follows the lines word by word until she is able to speak out automatically. She would not miss a single chance to improve her English. Whenever and wherever possible, she would try to express herself in English. During the days when she was studying in a foreign language school, she made good use of the language environment and submerged herself in English, communicating with the foreign teachers there. Even though she is the top student in my class, she always pays close attention to my lecture.

She has now found the way that is effective and suitable for her in the years of studying English. For example, she does not try to memorize a new word by repeating it in a dull way; she learns it by putting it into practice or through a context.

Persistence is another key factor for her to learn English well. For years, she has developed the habit of collecting well-structured sentences and well-written articles whenever they come to her. She practices them until she can speak fluently from her memory. People are amazed at her excellent English and assume her to be a genius in language acquisition. But she denies the assumption as she is convinced that her proficiency in English results from years of persistent practice and struggles.

I am proud of my student, Zhang Siwen. I hope that she will go to the final in this great competition and make her bigger dream come true.
