　　Learning English: My Own Way

　　English learning is as enjoyable as anything. When people ask me for tips of learning English, I would offer the following two tips for them to take.

　　1. Be aware of different expressions in a foreign language

　　As everybody knows, communicating involves using words to express ideas and feelings. In different countries, people use common phrases to express themselves. For instance, in Chinese we say “banmengnongfu”, but in English they say, instead, “Don’t teach your granny to suck eggs” or “Don’t teach fish to swim”. Therefore, it is important for an English learner to learn to be aware of English expressions.

　　2. Do your best to use the expressions

　　Another more important thing to do is to try to connect the ideas that I want to communicate with the language expressions. For instance, when I first met the English expression “a piece of cake”, I knew it meant “xiaocaiyidie” in Chinese. Whenever I want to express the meaning of “xiaocaiyidie”, I would say “it is a piece of cake” in real communication, until one day the English expression “it is a piece of cake” comes out of mouth as easily as “xiaocaiyidie”.

　　学习英语：我自己的方式

　　英语学习令人无比愉快。当人们向我咨询英语学习建议的时候，我总会提出以下两点供他们参考：

　　一、要留意外语的不同表达方式：

　　众所周知，与人交际就要运用词语表达思想与情感。在不同的文化中，人们都运用常用词语来表达。比如，汉语说“班门弄斧”，而英语则说“莫教奶奶吃鸡蛋”或“莫教鱼游泳”。因此，对于英语学者来说，重要的是学会留意英语表达方式。

　　二、尽量运用表达方式：

　　另一个更重要的事情就是尽量在我想要表达的思想与语言表达方式之间建立联结。比如，当我第一次遇到“a piece of cake”这一英文表达时，我知道此表达的汉语意思是“小菜一碟”。在真实交际中，每当我意欲表达“小菜一碟”这一思想时，我就说“it’s a piece of cake”，直到有一天“这是小菜一碟”脱口而出。

　　The Secret of Learning English

　　Everybody longs for fluent English, but how to do the trick. If I can show you in one minute the tricks of the trade in learning English, I will be more than satisfied. The secret of learning English lies in the mental association between ideas and language expressions. Different cultures have different expressions for the same idea. For instance, in Chinese we say “Banmennongfu”, but in English they say, instead, “Don’t teach fish to swim”. Therefore, it is important for an English learner to learn to be aware of English expressions. However, more important is the mental practice of association between our ideas and the expressions we have learned. For example, when I first met the English expression “a piece of cake”, I knew it meant “Xiaocaiyidie” in Chinese. Whenever I wanted to express the idea of “Xiaocaiyidie” in real communication, I would say “it is a piece of cake”, until one day it came out of mouth as easily as “Xiaocaiyidie”. I have become a bilingual in a sense.

　　所有人都渴望讲一口流利英语，但何以如愿？如果能在一分钟内向各位展示学习英语的诀窍，那我就知足了。学习英语的奥秘在于思想与语言表达方式之间的心理联结。对于同一个思想，不同文化有不同的语言表达方式。比如，汉语说“班门弄斧”，而英语则说“莫教鱼游泳”。因此，英语学习者要学会留意英语表达方式。然而，更重要的则是心理的联结练习，将我们的思想与我们所学习的表达方式联结起来。比如，当我第一次遇到“a piece of cake”这一英文表达时，我知道此表达的汉语意思是“小菜一碟”。在真实交际中，每当我意欲表达“小菜一碟”这一思想时，我就说“it’s a piece of cake”，直到有一天“这是小菜一碟”脱口而出。在某种意义上说，我已经成为双语者了。
