  Eating Fish

Herman Melville. Ernest Hemingway. Some of our brightest minds had a thing for10) seafood. That may be no coincidence. Oily fish are rich in docosahexaenoic acid11) (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid that accounts for 40 percent of the makeup of brain cell membranes12) and which could improve neurotransmission. A handful of studies have linked fish-heavy diets with reduced risk of mental decline in old age.

A test of mice found that an omega-3-rich diet had no impact on cognitive function. And cold-water fish that are high in omega-3s are also likely to have elevated levels of methylmercury13) and PCBs14), both known neurotoxins. It would be great if fish really were brain food. Unfortunately, we're got to throw this one back.
