　　The adult males, feeling passionate in the last precious days of the mating season, were fooled into thinking the discarded ball was a female because of its curvy shape and size。

　　Professional photographer Reinhard Dirscherl captured the amusing moment at a small lake in Stockdorf near Munich, Germany。

　　Mr Dirscherl, 48, said: 'During mating season, male toads hold on to everything that looks or feels like a female toad。

　　'They will do this for several hours until they see something else that looks like a female or until they actually find one.They are not "resting" on the tennis ball, they just go a bit crazy during the mating season.'

　　The breeding season for the common toad lasts from early February until early May, according to the RSPCA. Each spring, toads may be seen migrating in large groups and over distances of a kilometre or more to reach their pond and breed。

　　At this time, the grey-brown amphibians are not just vulnerable to being tricked by a tennis ball - many are squashed when crawling across roads before they even reach their breeding ground。

　　Toads have a dry warty skin which means they can't 'breathe' through their skin as well as frogs, but they can survive on land in drier places。

　　Mr Dirscherl, from Munich, added: 'I was really pleased with the shots, I have never seen anything like this before.'
