Average woman spends £15k in her lifetime replacing make-up she has lost

Women mislay so much makeup they spend a staggering £15,872 replacing it during their lifetime, according to a new study。

The research found losing expensive cosmetics now costs the typical British woman £248 a year。

Those who do their makeup on the morning commute are some of the worst hit, with one in three leaving some on public transport。

Almost half have lost makeup in the back of a cab, a quarter has dropped some down the toilet and a third waved it goodbye after leaving it at an ex-partner’s house。

One in ten (9 per cent) have dropped makeup down the drain and a quarter (27 per cent) have left some in a restaurant。

The research, by the UK’s largest online beauty retailer feelunique.com, found most women now carry more than £200 worth of cosmetics。

As they carry it almost everywhere with them, 40 per cent admit losing at least one item per month and a scatty one in ten lose at least three pieces。

But it seems that modern women are so attached to their makeup the repercussions go much further than cost。

The study found 70 per cent of ladies have either cancelled a date or a business meeting because they couldn’t face it without lost lippy or mislaid mascara。

The power of makeup is such that 27 per cent admit feeling ‘vulnerable’ without it。

Going on a date bare-faced is inconceivable for 70 per cent of women, while half say a makeup-less job interview would be too stressful。

As a result, many consider their cosmetics to be priceless。

One in ten ladies - 11 per cent - would prefer to lose their coat than their makeup bag, and six per cent would even prefer to lose their cash card。

A feelunique.com spokesman said: 'When we lose a makeup bag it’s not just the cost of products we’ve lost, it’s something very personal。

'The contents of a makeup bag are built over time - some will be treasured favourites.'

Birmingham emerged as the makeup Bermuda triangle of the UK, where 15 per cent of women lose a lippy or mislay mascara at least once a week。

Amy Bent, a 23 year old sales executive from Birmingham, said: 'I always take makeup with me on a night out and often some is not in my bag at the end of the night。

'It must fall out of my bag when I’m dancing or I misplace it when reapplying throughout the night。

'I think I’ve owned over 20 shades of pink lipstick in the last year and when you’re buying Chanel, YSL and MAC that doesn’t come cheap。

'When you sit and work it out, I must spend over £1,000 a year which is frightening - the price of a holiday.'
