A California couple taking their dog for its daily walk have stumbled on buried treasure under a tree on their own property which turned out to be worth an estimated $10 million (£6.5 million)。

The couple unearthed a series of old tins containing more than 1,400 19th Century US gold coins in mint condition。

The money dates from the California Gold Rush era but how it came to be buried in their garden is a mystery。

The face value of the coins is $28,000 but some are so rare experts believe they could sell for $1 million apiece and the whole cache be worth in excess of $10 million。

It is believed to be the biggest haul of buried treasure ever found in the US。

The couple has kept most of the details of their identity and location a secret, naming themselves only as “John and Mary” through Kagin’s Inc, a California coin company now representing them。

Some of the coins are expected to be loaned to go on display today THURS at the American Numismatic Association’s national money show in Atlanta, Georgia。

“I thought any second an old miner with a mule was going to appear,” said “ John”, of the moment he and “Mary” stumbled upon the coins, in an interview on the Kagins’s Inc website。

They walk about their property every day but had never before glimpsed the rusting tin protruding partially from the soil next to a tree。

When they eventually did and began digging they found eight old tins stuffed with coins。

The rare and apparently perfectly-preserved US gold coins all date from 1847 to 1894, which is comparatively young in global terms but was a time of upheaval and rapid development westwards in the history of America。

Most have never been in circulation and will be highly sought after by collectors, said David Hall, a co-founder of the Professional Coin Grading Service company of Santa Ana, California, who authenticated the find。

The couple said they plan to keep some of the coins but will sell most of them on the internet。
