一、定语从句

　　定语和定语从句的翻译一直是考研翻译的一个重点，汉语和英语关于定语的位置和结构有着非常大的区别。汉语中，定语与所修饰词的位置一般是定语在前，中心词在后。而在英语当中，定语和中心词的位置关系要复杂得多，如果定语是短语或是从句，那么它常放在所修饰的词的后面，这就是定语后置，翻译时可以把后置定语按照汉语习惯放在所修饰的词前面，也可以把它放在后面，翻译成一个相对应的句子。

　　2004年英译汉试题： 61. The Greeks assumed that the structure of language had some connection with the process of thought, which took root in Europe long before people realized how diverse language could be。

　　本题的重点是从句在本题中的应用，这也是同学们比较迷惑的地方，本道题共包括以下从句：The Greeks assumed that(宾语从句)， which (非限定性定语从句)， long before (时间状语从句)people realized how (宾语从句)。

　　本人发现在讲课时，以上从句当中which所引导的非限定性定语从句是同学们认为比较难的，到底which 所指代的先行词是什么呢？很多同学以为是the structure of language 或 the process of thought, 其实这两种判断都是不正确的，正确的应该是the structure of language had some connection with the process of thought, 也就是我们本道题的宾语从句。因此which指代的是这种观点，在翻译时要把“这一观点”翻译出来。

　　词的处理：

　　assume 认为；the structure of language 语言结构；the process of thought 思维过程

　　had some connection with… 与…有联系

　　完整译文：希腊人认为，语言结构与思维过程之间存在某种联系，这一观点在人们尚未认识到语言的千差万别之前就早已在欧洲扎下了根。

　　2003年英译汉试题： 62. Social science is that branch of intellectual enquiry which seeks to study humans and their endeavors in the same reasoned, orderly, systematic, and dispassioned manner that natural scientists use for the study of natural phenomena。

　　本题的重点依然在于定语从句在整句话当中的翻译方式以及是否能够正确理解定语从句的关系词和先行词，本句话的结构是：主句+which引导的定语从句+方式状语in the same reasoned, orderly, systematic, and dispassioned manner+定语从句。

　　对于第二个定语从句，即that 的先行词的理解对本句话的翻译有很大的影响，其实这里that的先行词就是manner, 而manner 在意思上又等同于way, 这样，本句话关键的定语从句就分析的十分清楚了。

　　词的处理：

　　social science 社会科学；intellectual enquiry 知识探究；humans and their endeavors 人类及其行为；dispassioned 冷静的

　　完整译文：社会科学是知识探索的一个分支，它力图像自然科学家研究自然现象那样，用理性的，有序的，系统的和冷静的方式研究人类及其行为。

　　二、状语从句

　　状语从句在英语当中主要有九大类：时间、地点、原因、结果、目的、条件、让步、比较、方式。状语从句同样也是考研翻译的一个重点。下面我们来分析一下在状语从句当中比较重要的几种。

　　2001年英译汉试题： 75. And home appliances will also become so smart that controlling and operating them will result in the breakout of a new psychological disorder—kitchen rage。

　　我们可以看出本句话的重点句型应该是一个结果状语从句，就是我们看到的so…that…结构，如果能够把这个结构搞清楚，这句话的整体翻译就应该比较简单了，so…that…我们一般翻译成“如此…以至于…”这应该是一种比较普遍而且能够被认同的翻译，于是这句话的整体结构就出来了。

　　词的处理：

　　home appliance 家用电器；result in 导致；psychological disorder 心理混乱；kitchen rage 厨房狂躁症

　　完整译文：家用电器将会变得如此智能化，以至于控制和操作它们会引发一种新的心理疾病—厨房狂躁症。

　　2004年英译汉试题： 63. The newly described languages were often so strikingly different from the well studied languages of Europe and Southeast Asia that some scholars even accused Boas and Sapir of fabricating their data。

　　这道题的整体感觉和上一道题差不多，其中最重要的从句也是结果状语从句，这也恰恰说明了考研知识点的相对固定和规律性。so…that…引导结果状语从句，so后面接了副词strikingly, strikingly 修饰different, 明显的区别；newly described (最近被描述的)与 well studied(得到充分研究的)都是过去分词短语作定语修饰languages。

　　完整译文：这些新近被描述的语言与已经得到充分研究的欧洲和东南亚地区的语言往往差别显著，以至于有些学者甚至指责Boas和Sapir编造材料。

　　1998年英译汉试题： 75. Odd though it sounds, cosmic infaltion is a scientifically plausible consequence of some respected ideas in elementary particle physics, and many astrophysicists have been convinced for the better part of a decade that it is true。

　　这道题的难点在于前四个单词，他是一个让步状语从句而且采用了倒装的结构，它的真面目是though it sounds odd, 如果同学们能够转化成这个句式的话，就相对来说很容易看清楚这句话的正确翻译。consequence 的后面有多重定语，that it is true 是一个分割式的宾语从句，for the better part of a decade 在其中起到了分割的作用。

　　词的处理：

　　cosmic infaltion 宇宙膨胀说；scientifically plausible consequence 科学上可信的推论；elementary particle physics 基本粒子物理学

　　完整译文：宇宙膨胀理论虽然听似奇特，但它是基本粒子物理学中一些公认的理论在科学上可信的推论。许多天体物理学家七八年来一直以为这一论述是正确的。

　　三、名词性从句

　　名词性从句主要包括四种，主语从句、宾语从句、表语从句、同位语从句。这四种从句在考研当中都有体现，下面我们一起来看看考研当中是怎样来体现其中某些重点从句的。

　　1994年英译汉试题：75. Whether the Government should increase the financing of pure science at the expense of technology or vice versa often depends on the issue of which is seen as the driving force。

　　通过这道题我们可以非常明显的看出主语从句在这个句子当中的体现，whether 引导主语从句，谓语部分是depends on the issue, which后面是issue的同位语从句，只要我们能够看出主语从句在其中的体现，这道题的解题方法就基本上出来了，whether…or 翻译成“是…还是…”。

　　词的处理：pure science 纯科学，纯理论科学；depend on 依赖；issue 论点，发行； vice versa 反之亦然；finance 财政，金融。

　　完整译文：政府究竟是以减少对技术的经费投入来增加对纯理论科学的经费投入，还是相反，这往往取决于把哪一方面看作是驱动型的力量。

　　1999年英译汉试题：74. There is no agreement whether methodology refers to the concepts peculiar to historical work in general or to the research techniques appropriate to the various branches of historical inquiry。

　　首先我们可以在本题当中再次看到whether这个单词，这里的whether引导的就已经不是主语从句了，而是一个同位语从句，是用来补充说明agreement的。这里还要注意一下后置定语的翻译，peculiar to historical work in general 是用来修饰the concepts的，appropriate to the various branches of historical inquiry 是用来修饰techniques的。同时我们也要注意这样句式的翻译方法，the concepts peculiar to historical work in general (按定语后置的翻译方法) 一般的历史研究中的特有概念。

　　词的处理：whether…refers to…or to… 是指…还是指…；the research techniques 研究手段；the various branches 各个领域；historical inquiry 历史探究

　　完整译文：所谓方法是指一般历史研究中的特有概念，还是指历史探究中各个具体领域适用的研究手段，人们对此意见不一。
