　　商榷信(Letters of Discussion)

　　商榷信主要是对某一议题发表个人见解，列举事实依据，论证所述论点。行文应连贯紧凑，说理要步步深入。

　　【例一】

　　Dear Editor,

　　Thank you for your starting a special column for the discussion o

n the space projects. Frankly, it seems to me that our space projects so far have been on the main a waste of money, time, energy, human lives and natural resources.

　　The richer countries are pouring large sum of money into space research programmes which are of no benefit to humanity while in undeveloped countries thousands of people are dying of hunger. Besides, many scientists time and energy are wasted, which could have been devoted to improving our living condition. Whats more, many astronauts have died completely uselessly in space vehicles which have been faulty. They were young people who havent enjoyed the fruit of life.

　　Apart from human wastage, there is the wastage of resources which are finite and essential if man is to survive. I think its high time we stopped these meaningless programmes.

　　【例二】

　　Dear Editor,

　　I was surprised to read in one of your recent issues the letter which criticized space projects of our time, saying that these projects have been totally a waste.

　　Is that really the case? My answer is definitely negative. We have already succeeded in using satellites for relaying TV broadcast and for weather forecase, and to some extent for earthquake prediction. Besides, the space shuttle has provided us with ideal experiment condition which cannot be obtained on earth. In addition, if we want to secure our living on this planet, we should have a better understanding of space — our surroundings.

　　This letter writer is shortsighted in that he sees the immediate profit rather than mans ultimate interests. He presents himself as a philanthropist, pitying people who died in space projects, but he forgets that there is danger in any enterprise. Im convinced that mans exploration of the unknown is worthwhile and it will pay in the long run.
