On Monday morning, the company president, Tom Farrow, asks his secretary about his schedule. He wants to set up a meeting with an important client the following morning. Since the afternoon is free, he decides to pay a visit to Software Development to greet the new senior software engineer. He schedules the visit for 14:00, and calls the Executive Vice-President, Jane Reynolds, to confirm her presence.

Tom:Lisa, what’s on my schedule today and tomorrow? Do I have any appointments?

Lisa:(checks the schedule) You have a lunch engagement with Miss Jones, but the afternoon is free. Tomorrow, you have appointments starting at 10:30. No free time after that.

Tom:OK. Set up a meeting with Mr. Edwards for 09:00 tomorrow…(thinks for a moment) I’d like to visit the Software Development department at 14:00 to meet our new Sr. Software Engineer. Is Jane Reynolds free at that time?

Lisa:(checks the company scheduler) Yes, she is.

Tom:OK, mark our schedules for a one-hour visit, and please call Ed Blakely (manager of the software development department) to notify him.

Lisa:Yes, sir. Will that be all?

Tom:Can you bring me the Genco report? And please hold my calls for the next half-hour.

Lisa:Right. Would you like me to get you a cup of coffee?

Tom:Yes, please…(calls Jane Reynolds) Hi, Jane. I’ve made an appointment with Ed Blakely to meet John Li tomorrow at 14:00.

Jane:Alright. I’m anxious to meet him, too. See you then.

Tom:Good (hangs up, and then starts browsing a document in preparation for his next appointment)

  注释

  1.Please hold my calls.

如这句中的‘hold’和“Put them on hold”都是这个意思。

2.Please get me a cup of coffee.

3.What's on my schedule for today?

What are the plans for today?”“What do I have lined up?”

  4.Do I have any appointments?

5.May I see you in my office?

  “Uh-oh!”去老板的办公室一趟,希望只是谈谈工作,当然最好是‘get a promotion’或‘get a raise’,可千万别是老板失望地对你说:“You got sacked.”或“You are fired.”

6.I would like to make an appointment with...

‘Make an appointment with somebody’指和某人约一下,这也可以随便地说成“I’d like to get together with somebody.”

7.I would like to call a meeting.

8.Can you hand me that ... please?

在这儿用了‘hand’的动词形式,英语的解释就是‘bring something to me with your hand’—递.‘Hand’还有其它的很多用法,如“Give me a hand!”(帮我一把!)“I am a new hand in this company.”(我是公司里的新手。)

  9.Did you finish the...?

或“Sure, it is all set/finished”. 或可以委婉一点说,“Not yet, I am still working on it.”(还没完,我正在做呢。)

10.Can you please take a message for me?

  留个条最好的说法便是“Can I take a message?”

There are more and more male secretaries in the West today. Ironically, this may be partly due to the women’s liberation movement. Women argue that any job should be available to them, and no job should be stereotyped for women only.
