David Beckham was a surprise choice as captain |
England cruised to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday, with goals from Gareth Barry and Jermaine Defoe.
The friendly 友谊赛 was the fourth in charge for new England manager Fabio Cappello, who surprised football fans by awarding the captaincy 将队长头衔授予 to David Beckham.
Cappello took the opportunity to evaluate 评价 his players in order to decide who will be in the England squad as it begins its campaign to qualify for the 2010 World Cup.
But Cappello refused to be drawn 拒绝透露 on who will actually be in the team.
"I have the summer to think about my selections. I can’t decide on the team because I don’t know which players will be fit," said Cappello.
He was similarly guarded 守口如瓶 on the issue of who will be the permanent England captain.
"I have some idea who it will be," said Capello, meaning he is not yet sure who he will pick as captain.
David Beckham did not expect to be made skipper 队长 for the Trinidad game as he stepped down 退下 from the role after the 2006 World Cup.
"I was surprised but I’ll always answer the call 随时待命 and be available for my country and captain them as well – it was a surprise but I am honoured to do so," said Beckham.
After a long domestic season the England players will take a well-deserved rest this summer, although many will wish they were competing in the Euro 2008 competition.
The next significant date on the England calendar will be in three month’s time when they take on Croatia, the team that dumped England out 将英格兰排挤掉 of this summer’s tournament.
One player who will be looking forward to that meeting is Portsmouth’s Jermaine Defoe who scored twice against Trinidad and Tobago.
"To play for your country is the best thing in the world. The lads have had long seasons but they're all here and we've enjoyed every minute of it," said Defoe.
"I just want to keep learning. When a new manager comes in everyone starts on the same level and to get two goals, I'm delighted."
