The happy Hull City players |
Arsenal were knocked off the top 从英超榜首溃败而下of the Premiership this weekend following a shock 2-1 victory 惊人的2-1胜利 by league newcomers 升级新队/升班马 Hull City.
It was the biggest upset 挫败 of the season so far, as wins from Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool sent Arsenal down to fourth place from first in the league.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger praised 称赞 Hull City saying, "they deserve credit" 他们当之无愧. He means they deserve lots of praise as it was a great result for them.

Shocking defeat
It was a shocking defeat for us and our commitment was just not good enough…..they (Hull) deserve credit.
Arsene Wenger, Arsenal manager
|
He maintained, "It was a shocking 惨痛的 defeat for us and our commitment was just not good enough." This use of the word shocking means it was a very bad defeat.
Wenger blamed the team's failure to take chances during the game. "I think we had 15 chances and scored a scrappy goal 胡乱踢入的一球, they had nearly nothing and they scored two goals. We were not mature 认识(不足) enough to kill the game off."
With the word scrappy, Wenger means a goal that is not the result of well-organised play and is a bit messy 忙乱慌张的.

Scrappy
I think we had 15 chances and scored a scrappy goal, they had nearly nothing and they scored two goals. We were not mature enough to kill the game off.
Arsene Wenger, Arsenal manager

When Wenger talks about "killing the game off" he means Arsenal didn’t quite have the right attitude, or the maturity 认识不足/轻敌 to just go ahead and end the game by winning comfortably.
Hull City on the other hand had very few chances but scored two goals, including a sensational strike 惊世骇俗的破门 from Geovanni that thundered into the net 破门入网 from 25 yards (almost 23 metres) out.
Arsenal were clear favourites 看好的强队 to win the game as Hull City, playing their first season in the Premiership in the team’s 104-year history, continue to be underdogs 弱队 as they strive to prove themselves 用行动证明自己的实力 at the top level.
Arsenal have only lost twice at their home ground since moving into the new Emirates stadium in 2006. The only other team to beat them there were West Ham.
Hull City have won their last three games away from their home ground and they now sit sixth in the Premiership.

Proving People Wrong
It’s one of my greatest results – Wembley and Newcastle were great but we’re proving people wrong all the time.
Phil Brown, Hull City manager
|
Only six years ago the team were at the bottom of the second division. Their ascent 晋级 to the Premiership has been the third-fastest ever in English football history.
Hull manager Phil Brown was obviously very pleased. "It's one of my greatest results – Wembley (where they beat Bristol to get into the Premiership) and Newcastle were great but we're proving people wrong 我们在证明着人们的猜测是错误的 all the time."
People tend to expect Hull to not perform so well but they are constantly exceeding expectations 超过人们的期待.
Hull City, in fact, currently 目前 have the same number of points in sixth position in the league as Derby County achieved in the whole of last season, and they still have 32 games left to play.

Drive
We have a drive, an endeavour and a belief that we can come to places and get a result.
Phil Brown, Hull City manager
|
Their success should continue to increase the team's confidence. Brown says that Hull "have a drive 动力, an endeavour 拼搏精神 and a belief that we can come to places and get a result".
He means that Hull City believe in themselves that they can do well and with such drive to succeed, they can only hope they continue to perform well throughout the season and establish themselves as a credible 名副其实的 Premiership team.
