The Goal that Cost £12m 一失足成千古恨

Rangers player Christain Dailly hangs his head after his side lose to FBK Kaunas
Rangers shock defeat to FBK Kaunus could prove costly
While the English Premier League begins next week, the Scottish Premier League is already underway 开始了,正在进行.

The SPL is usually a two-horse race 两马相争 between the dominant 占优势的 Glasgow clubs Rangers and Celtic.

As expected, both teams won their opening games this weekend, but many pundits 专家 are backing 支持 Celtic to take their fourth title in a row 林旭获得四次冠军 this year.

One of the big reasons for this is to do with money. Though Celtic and Rangers are by far the richest teams in the SPL, this season Rangers stand to lose out on a potential £12m (160m yuan) windfall 意外获得财产 after their early departure 提前离赛 from all European competitions.

They crashed out 被挤出 of the Champions League qualifiers 欧洲冠军联赛预选赛 last week when Lithuanian minnows 不知名的小球队(原意:米诺鱼,一种淡水鱼) FBK Kaunas beat them 2-1 after a late headed goal 头球.

This came as a massive shock to Rangers manager Walter Smith, who had led his team to the final of the UEFA Cup 欧洲联盟杯 last year.

A big blow
It's a blow in every aspect, including the financial side and everything that comes with it.

Walter Smith, Rangers manager

When he says it's a "blow", he means it's an unexpected result that has a negative impact on the team.

As he says, the financial side 经济方面 is very important. Celtic are now the only Scottish team in the group stages 小组赛 of the Champions League, and so will now get all of Scotland's TV money for the tournament.

Not only have Rangers now got less money to spend on players, but the fact they are not competing in the glamorous 魅力十足的 Champions League or UEFA Cup means that it will be hard to attract top international players who wish to boost their profile 提升他们的人气.

Former Rangers defender 后卫 Craig Paterson thinks this could be a problem.

Second thoughts
Walter Smith obviously needs to bring players in but now he doesn't have the Champions League to dangle in front of these guys. There might have been deals in the pipeline and these guys will be thinking 'maybe it's not the right time to be going to Ibrox'.

Craig Paterson, former Rangers defender

When he uses the verb "to dangle", (悬垂,引诱) he is suggesting the Champions League is something attractive that can be hung in front of players like some kind of tempting fruit.

Paterson also says there were deals "in the pipeline", which means there were deals in the process of happening, or had a good chance of happening soon. Now some of these players may be having second thoughts 重新考虑 about coming to play for Rangers at their stadium Ibrox.

But some columnists think that losing to Kaunas may act as a wake-up call (通常只酒店的早叫服务)提醒 for Rangers, and spur them on 驱使,鼓励 to play well this season.

Last season Rangers led the Scottish Premier League table for most of the year, but were pipped at the post 功败垂成 by Celtic. Many fans think this is because Rangers were exhausted 精疲力尽的 after playing so many extra games in the UEFA Cup.

Perhaps this year the break from European football could be a blessing in disguise 因祸得福 for Rangers.
