Did you dream last night? If you did, can you remember what you dreamed about? Everybody dreams, whether1 they remember or not. But why do we dream?
There are different ideas about the purpose2 of dreaming. One popular explanation is that dreams free3 our emotions.4 They seem to help us work out problems when we are sleeping, so that we can live happier lives during the day.
Whether there is a purpose or not, it does seem that people have a need to dream. In one study, sleeping people were woken up every time a machine showed that they were dreaming. After a few days, they felt nervous, were easily upset, and were hungrier than usual, even though they were getting about eight hours of sleep. It seems that dreaming is good for us.
